Or what I should do? He's been acting very strange lately, and with the heatwave we are having he hasn't been outside , eating very little. Drinking some water, on his few forays outside he's started eating grass and licking this rusted fence.

Your cat is most likely lacking iron. You should consider switching your cats food to one that contains more iron than he's currently getting.
I notice my cats eat less in summer and tend to lay around more. I also have aging cats. If you notice that he stops eating and drinking, don't wait, take him to your vet without delay.
Lacking minerals in his diet. Try supplementing his feeding with some moist or canned food, preferrably fish or seafood. I also give my 12 year old cat the water from water packed tuna or other seafoods. She loves it! You must keep him hydrated.
When you say aging how old is he, I have a 19 year old and found out a month ago that his PH level was way up which for an older cat is very dangerous but with shots and treatments (food wise) he is fine just need to keep him away from the other cats and on a special diet. He was acting the sameway a little over a month ago that is why I took him to a vet. The eating grass is calming his tummy, give him a little (1/4 tsp.) of Pepto Bismal in his water and he will curb the eating grass. Also try in this heat to keep him inside as much as possible, he does have on a fur coat after all!
Probably some sort of deficiency. They have special food for older cats.
Probably old age dementia. Cats have a limitted sense of taste but they enjoy foods with lots of texture. They can't taste sweetness, but try giving him ice cream, or even crushed ice.

my cat is doing the same thing and sadly he was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer and does not have long at all. He started licking metal a week ago about a day after his diagnosis. Take your baby to the vet. I pray you do not have to go through what my family is right now.

ReplyDeleteMy wife craved mud pies when she was pregnant 😂😂😂..iron defficiency.is it such a stretch to believe animals will also crave what they are lacking.. changing a diet to older cat varieties will solve this I'm sure
