An orange cat showed up at my back door. How do I care for him?

He is an outside cat we have seen roaming the neighborhood.
I fed him some cat food, and lots of love and attention.I don't have a clue what to do about litter box etc. I don't want him pooping on the front lawn like he is doing.I feed him (dry cat food)in the same area under the carport. Now what?
Answers:
If you are giving him love, attention, and especially FOOD, you've got yourself a PERMANENT cat friend. Get used to him around your house, because he will return again and again if food is given to him.
Also, if he is friendly enough to let you pet him and is eating dry cat food, then he was definitely someone's cat once. In that case, you should take him to an animal rescue center to get him neutered if he isn't already and get checked for a microchip. Talk to the people at the shelter and see if they know where his home is or think they could find his home.
If there is no known owner, you can either give him to the shelter, or adopt him yourself. If you choose to adopt him, here's what you need to do:
1. take him to the vet!
2. treat him for fleas which he almost definitely has
3. buy supplies: food, food/water dishes, flea collar, kitty nail clippers, toys, etc.
4. welcome him to the family!
just gave him food and water in the back yard that's it.
You should keep him =) he needs a loving owner
Get a cat box at the pet store and some clumping cat litter. It's easy. Put the cat litter into the box and wella...problem solved. Make sure to get a scoop to clean the box out.
i would get him a bed, and a litter box with some self cleaning crystals. SOme fun kitty toys, and some katnip yummy!
HE MIGHT BE LOST IF HE DONT GO TRY PUTTING POSTERS OUT FOR HIM. CARRY ON FEEDING IT. GOOD LUCK.
Just put it back outside and close the door, and hope some big dog comes by.
First things first I must say cuttttee. Orange cats are very cute. The first thing you should do before deciding to adopt this kitty is to take him/her to a Vet ASAP to be sure he is free of disease and is healthy. More times then not, strays have worms and this needs to be treated. After he/she checks out fine, I'd start with a large litter pan about 2-3 inches full. Hard clumping litter is best.Make sure the litter pan is not near the cat food. I would also consider keeping the cat indoors. Cats longevity is based on whether its an outdoor/indoor cat. Get the kitty spayed/neutered immediately. Lastly be sure that there is plenty of clean fresh water at all times. It is a long time commitment to adopt a pet. Be sure you will have the funds to properly care for the kitty. If not, its best to call your local animal shelter so the kitty could be adopted by someone else. :) Good luck!
same thing happend to us. he just showed up in our backyard, and sat on my moms lap. we searched for his house, but his owners left him behind wen they moved poor thing. weve had him ever since then. he is an extreemly smart cat, but enough about him, i htink you should search for his home, and keep him if he doesnt have one. litter box train him, ours wansnt to young he was kinda old but he still learnd. maybe get him a freind too. we kept him inside and outside.
You should try taking inside your house and keep it or take it to a shelter. Also try putting up posters for a found cat. It could have been someones pet that got lost.
get a litter tray and try to train him to go on it other than that it sounds like you,r doing fine he might dissapear fo a few days at a time cats that turn up like that probably live in the area anyway and sometimes get lost or he might just prefer the food you give him instead of where he came from
okay well you do not no if that cat had any disease so i would call the vet and i would make and appointment then put the cat in the cage and take it see what wrong then if it okay i would get the cat fixed or else it will get pregnant so then i would keep it in outdoor cat and put the food and water bowls in the garage with the littler box!

i love you Nichole =]
Well think about it... Most likely he has an owner. Is he skinny? Is he scared of people? I'm not saying that that deffinetly means he's a stray but don't take him, he could deffinelty belong to someone and think how they would feel without they're cat being gone- most people think of their cats as part of the family. I have an orange tabby cat who's an outside cat, he go's in people's backyards all the time, he doesn't wear a collar, he can be frightened by new people who approach him, and he's a VERY skinny cat(but eats a ton)- My situation of one example of how any cat can look like a stray or seem like one but not actually be one.
Don't take in the cat, in fact don't even feed him you'd just be waisting money if the cat already has owners to feed it. But I could deffinetly be wrong if the cat looks starved then feed it but don't take it in your house because you never know about anything...
put fliers for lost cat and keep feeding it.
put a litter box outside with litter in it, they will use it!
An outdoor litterbox? hahahaha..
Well if you want a cat then adopt one at an animal shelter. You shouldn't be adopting stray cats. They might have diseases. He also probably has fleas.
