Any one have experience caring for a cat with a broken tail?

Our indoor cat escaped during a thunderstorm and was gone for two days. She showed up at the front door about an hour ago with a broken tail. The break is near where the tail meets the body. I think she has nerve damage because she is having trouble with her rear legs. She still has feeling in the tail. Is this something we need to make a trip to the emergency vet for, or can it wait until morning? Also, what can I expect the vet to do about it? What can I do for her until she sees the vet?

My suggestion is that you do take the cat to the veterinarian as soon as possible; I would suggest explaining to the receptionist and go to the "regular" vet as soon as I could get an appointment. DO NOT WAIT. Without treatment, your kitty may develop a serious infection. Also, the fact that you kitty is having problems with her rear legs worries me.
Make sure you have as much information as possible (what happened? Is she eating/drinking normally? Going to the bathroom? Any behavioral changes?)
Since I am not a veterinarian, I cannot give you specific diagnoses or treatments. The vet will do a physical examination and give you treatment options. From the description, I would think that your cat would probably have some fluid therapy and at least antibiotics.
I would just keep your kitty calm and offer food and water.
oh my god that sound bad well i tihnk u should take it to the vet immediatly cus it might die during the night...
Oh please take it to the vet right away.
dont take it to the vet just keep it confined
I would get her to the emergency vet.
Try this test but be VERY CAREFULL
Using a clean cotton swab, try making circle around the cat anus, this is to test this area for stimuli.
Near the tail base, are several nerves that control the tail, anus and uretra.
I had a cat that was ran over a bicycle, ended with a broken leg and tail. After 6 to 8 weeks, she develop a callus and nerve was like.re-connected
Was waving her tail till she was gone.
So, have the cat x rayed. Maintain the cat as still as possible, provide soft food in case of anus nerve failure and check if she can urine with ease, if not, you will need to visit the vet sooner. She could suffer from renal failure in case she cant remove her waste (urine and fecal)
As for the tail..dont worry.she will "learn" to use it again.
Good luck!!
Since it appears broken at the base, I would go to the emergency vet ASAP! Good luck!
well if there's a lot of blood or something, i'd say take her in to get checked out...
i've known two people with cats who've broken their tails. one was a stray and walked around for a long time with part of it literally hanging off (already healed). then one day it got ripped off. it meowed really loud but was fine (pretty gross though). the other's tail was slammed in the door but wasn't taken care of for several days and was fine in the end... dont know if that helps at all. good luck!
