Are all calico cats this?

a female?!?
Answers:
yes. it is extremely extremely rare to have a male calico.
very rarely they are male
if you have a male, you are very lucky. males are uncommon.
Most calicos are female. Only 1 in 3000 calicos are males.
A true calico is either a female or a sterile male.
My biology teacher says that the third colour gene is in the xx gene in female cats. Male cats have xy so they don't have the third colour gene. If you have a tom that is calico and he is fertile hold on to him you have a treasure. I have also seen kittens with three colours a birth that fade to two colours by six months.
mostly yes, but very rarely there will be a male.
Yes, all tortie or calico cats are female, apart from the very rare odd male who has a genetic abnormality. It is a sex linked colour detirmined by genes on the X chromosome. XX is female and XY is male. A calico cat has a gene for orange on one X and a gene for black on the other. Some of the skin pigment cells follow one and some follow the other giving the mix of black and orange. The males only have one X so all the cells just follow the orange gene if he has it.

Are all calico cats female?

well I waswatching this show on animal planet where theres a jewelry store and cats up for adoption and one cat was a calico and she was pregnant and the lady on the show said that all calicos are female and my female calico baby is calico and shes a female can you tell me if this is true
Answers:
The vast majority are female. The odds of a male calico cat are 1 out of 3000. It is to do with the color gene that carries "calico" is only on the X chromosomes (females are XX), but sometimes a male cat has 2 X chromosomes, making the male cat an XXY, and thus has the ability to be calico. Male calicoes are almost always infertile because of this extra X chromosome.
Most, but not all. It is VERY rare to have a male calico. Kinda neat.
"you must have two X genes to be a calico. Male calicos have genetic aberrations of various sorts, of which XXY is most common. While they are most commonly sterile, there *are* documented cases of fertile male calicos. However, the generalization that "all calicos/torties are female" is true 99.999 percent of the time"
Absolutely true. It is gene related coloration. And carried on both X's...Not on the Y.
Pretty much! It's a genetic thing.
i am sure that there r male calico cats but they r VERY rare. my aunt had a litter of kittens at her farm and one was calico and it was male. but mostly they r females. if u do find a male calico it is very special. they r really rare to find
well, its very very very rare to have a male calico
most of them are female but thre are male ones. they are very rare and expensive.
Although i dont know if it is true i have always heard this. But if you think about it there are a lot of cats in the world and theres a possibilatey that there are a few. I would suggest asking it on ask or google.com
yes it is true all calicos are females. i have a calico and i cant find a male that is a calico
idk......won... how they get pregnant? =o
I have heard that HOWEVER, I have a male cat who has 3 colors and he is a boy not a girl.
No, there are males as well, but most are females. Like orange tabbies are mostly male, but you'll find females from time to time, with them as well. A friend of mine does have a male calico. Take care...All the best;~)
Yes all calicos are female i have had cats since i was 3 weeks. I had one for my birthday and i mean the week after i was out of the hospital!
Most all calico's are females and males calico's are rare.
If you have a male calico, it could be worth a thousand dollars. That's how rare they are.
Yes it is correct that all Calico's are Female.
yes and I have one too! her name is Precious鈾?They have such beautiful color to them!!鈾?
no their not all fem males i had a male calico cat at one time . matter of fact the nab er down the sreet has a male calico cat.yellow orange white all colors on it
I had a calico cat and names "him" Cyle. Come to find out at the vet, it was a girl. The vet said that it is extremely rare to have a male calico, and if you do they are very exotic and worth a lot of money... So you would be very lucky. But I am not in anyway sell or breed animals, calicos or not, that is mean and unfair.
Most of all the calico cats out there are females, but sometimes you come about those rare occurences when you get yourself a boy calico. It's exactly the opposite with orange tabbies. Only males (most of the time yet again) are orange tabbies. If you come across a female orange tabby or male calico, they're worth tons of money. A thousand or more. They're extremely rare.
Take note though: calico is the furmarking, not the breed. All sorts of breeds have different fur markings (for example: gray or orange tabby.)
Yes tihis is true.
It's EXTREMELY rare to have a calico male. I have a calico female kitten. Her names fits, lol. Her name is Bella, beautiful in italian. She is SO cute!!!
Not true, one in exactly three thousand is male.
Nope,99% are Female Cats.1% are Male Cats.
The Calico is a XX Gene(Female)
In order for a male cat to be considered 'Calico',Male Cats must have the XXY Gene, which is different then their normal XY Gene.Male Cats are rare, and worth alot of money( DO NOT SELL THEM!),and they act the same as a female.Calico Females are normal, and Males are rare, basicly.
Yes there are males. They are very rare. They are not worth any more than a calico female though, unless they are fertile. That is even rare-er!
1-3,000 are male
1-10,00 are males are fertile
Toodles!

Anyway to stop my cat?

My cat is very jelous when it comes to other cats.He will come and bite you when you pay attention to one of the other kitties or when you brush one of the other cats he'll come and push them out of the way.Im fine with it but it kinda ticks me off when the other cats dont get much attention and it hurts when he bites.
Answers:
It might help to set aside a few minutes where you tell this cat you are going to focus just on him, but after that it is the other cats' turns. Give him that focussed attention, brushing, playing petting, whatever he wants. Then move on to the next cat. If/when he tries to butt in on the other cats' attention, you can give him a "time-out" by putting him under an upside-down laundry basket for 3-5 minutes. If you see him coming, you might snap your fingers and point at him while making a "Shht!" sound to tell him to back off. Use this to make a boundary, say 3 feet or so, where he cannot come any closer if it is not his turn.
If you give him a time out, make sure the laundry basket is in the middle of the room, and you might need to put something heavy on top of it to keep him from escaping. This should put the social pressure on him to change his behavior because he will be embarrassed, and also it will give him a chance to cool down if he is angry.
I do this with my two cats when they get to fighting, or when they insist on jumping up on the table during our mealtimes - after a couple firm "No!"s have been tried.
The first time, it's a 3-5 minute time out. If they keep fighting, I increase it by a couple minutes, and that usually is plenty. When they interrupt meals, if they keep it up after the first time-out, I leave 'em in the basket until we have finished eating.
But I certainly would not advise leaving a cat in the basket for too long. And also, it is best to not use a cat carrier for a time out, because you don't want them to associate the thing that takes them to the vet with a punishment (that will make the trip to the vet even more unpleasant for them).
Whenever he bites you, tell him a firm No!, and push in toward the bite. You aren't trying to stick your finger down his throat, but to show him you aren't scared like a mouse. Then shut him out of whatever activity is going on - by simply ignoring him for a time (yay for social pressure!) or by using a time-out. Do not under any circumstances let him get away with biting your nose - this is a play for social dominance. I have dealt with attempts to bite my nose by holding the cat's head and placing my mouth around her nose and mouth - not biting down, just holding her there for a moment.
Any time he is good and patient while you give attention to another cat, be sure to praise him, and reward him - either with a treat, or with some more special attention.
Push his "reset button". Buy some Rescue Remedy and spray a puff of it in his face! He'll turn into a sweet little angel.
Well.....put some Cat Food in your pockets...Then when about to bite then just drop it on the floor and it gets distratcted.
Get him a electric collar and whenever he tries to come in contact with somebodys arm it will shock him and it will stun him for a second and then whenever he wakes up he will leave whoever he was trying to bite alone. DO THIS NOW!
Make sure you give him plenty of attention, but you also need to stop the bad behavior. It may take a lot of time depending upon how ingrained the behavior is, but this will work: Buy a squirt gun or a spray bottle (fill with water) and every time he misbehaves you shoot him with it and tell him "NO!" in a very firm voice. When my cats begin to act up, all I have to do now is pick up the spray bottle.
well really cats are like people, they get set in their ways. this behavior is just the way ur cat personality is. he/she wants to be the center of attention all the time. however the bitting is something that need to be stopped right away cause sooner or later, it will get worse or the jelous cat will start bitting the oother cats around and thats not good. show him whos boss! i've had cats all my life and i had something like this happen to me before. its something that takes time but when its all said and done, both you and your cats will reek the benifits.
You can reprimand him with a squirt bottle when he bites you, but cats have to work out a hierarchy between themselves. You definitely want to spend time with the others, though, so try a distraction or even removing him from the room (you could even give him a treat so he won't feel punished) while you play with the others. If he can't see the others getting attention, he can't get jealous. Good luck with your kitties!

Anyone's else's cat...?

shedding profusely?!??! its like i pet her and KABOOM, a ball of hair. its like "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ALREADY!"
Answers:
yeah,it is the season because the heat keeps rising you can try to brush but i say try a bath but i dont see much results sorry
Brush her/him
Like I brush my brain with the Quran or my brains will shed
it sounds like she is just going through her normal shedding cycle and the heat is causing her to shed more. she also might be stressed about something or have a poor diet. try brushing her everyday, that should help a lot. it should slow down as the weather turns colder, if it doesn't it might be time to consult the vet.
It's that time of year. There are some things you can do to help, but nothing will completly prevent what you are experiencing.
You can brush her every day to help get rid of excess hair.
You can give her a bath
You can give her fish oil or flax seed suppliments
Make sure her food is free of corn, wheat, and soy, which can cause poor skin and coat quality, which increases shedding.

Anyone who lives in or near coppell, texas have you found a black-ish cat below is better description?

he is a long haired 5 year-old outside cat he has some gold on the tip of his hair hes been missing for a month he has no collars please help if you saw one send me a picture if you can im desperate.
Answers:
Have you checked your local shelters, put posters up, and ask neighbors? Maybe he find a new home. Has he every been gone for this long before? A month is a long time, I hope you find him, and if you do, please keep him inside in the future. Good Luck
If I could find him, I would return him to you right now. But a lot of cats fit that description. I am sorry that your cat is missing.
The cat, if accustomed to being outdoors, may come back on its own, unless he is being held indoors by someone or has been killed by a motor vehicle. I sincerely, hope and pray that your cat is alive and well and that he will find his way home very very soon.
If you truly love your cat, you will have him neutered, put his collar on him with a contact number on it and keep him in the house at all times, in the future. Best wishes.
i dont live there put an add in the paper and knock on the surrounding doors then call animal controll see if they can help

Anyone who has ever lost their cat, please reply?

I just lost mine almost a month ago, he was a beautiful outdoors tabby, greyish blackish. I now regret declawing him, and he doesn't usually stay out this long.
Just taking a quick poll to see if anyone here has lost their cat before and what happened. You can describe what happened, or fill out this form (completely!):
How old was your cat?
Male or Female?
How long till kitty came back?
Was he/she injured?
If Kitty didn't come back, did you ever find out his/her fate?
Was he/she indoors or outdoors cat?
I've already left ads over at a few neighbors' and 2 animal clinics, and searched online petfinding services, no luck.
Best answer goes to most detailed; thank you!

My cousin has an outdoor cat. He's almost 20 now. Back when he was around 5 or 6, he left one day and didn't return. She was mortified. She was convinced he was gone - two or three months later, as if it were like any other day, he showed up at the door. He had some tufts of hair gone, you could tell he was in a few brawls. She took him in, fed him, brought him to the vets. I don't know how she found the strength, but she let him out again, and he always returned the same day from then on.
Let me get this straight. You had your cat declawed and then you let him go outside. Is that correct?
Now you're looking for answers?
Now you're searching for him?
What chances do you think this poor thing has of surviving outdoors?
If a predator didn't get him then traffic has.
I don't know what the poll will actually do to help you, it's not going to provide you with anything that will help you get your cat back.
You didn't say if you contacted your local animal control,or the local shelters or the people who remove dead animals from the street. The first two only keep animals for a week--you need to call them every two to three days and make a trip down once a week in case their records don't accurately describe your pet. The animal removal people keep records of what they find, which can be requested. You should also contact all the vets in your area, notjust a few, and leave 'lost' posters on their bulletin boards.
A lost cat can go up to five miles, so just telling a few neighbors isn't going to be enough. People who loose pets have to blanket a 4 block area in every direction from their house, to get good coverage. Asking kids to keep an eye out for your pet is a good idea too.
A long time ago I had an adorable affectionate cat named Slyvester (he looked like the cartoon cat). He was a stray adult cat that the neighborhood fed, but he adopted me. Always obedient, he came when I called his name and never scratched or bit anyone. I had him for 4 years and was moving to a no-cat home so I couldn't take him with me. We left him at our old place where we thought others could easily look after him. A month later, when visiting a local store, I spotted him walking in the opposite direction of me. I called out "Slyvester!Slyvester!!" and he came running into my arms. I decided to ignore my house rules and keep him once and for all. All was right with my world. I would keep him indoors, unless he had to use the bathroom. I had him at the new place for another month when he pooped all over my new comforter. I yelled at him and made him go in the basement for 10 minutes while I cleaned the mess up. After letting him out of the basement, he was very glum. He wouldn't nuzzle me with as much vigor and he went by the front door. I assumed he wanted outside so that he could finish using the bathroom. I let him out to do his business and he never came back. I still miss him 8 years later and will never forget my unique, sensitive Slyvester. Many cats later I still haven't found a cat like him. He was truely one of a kind. I will never know what happened to him or where he went. I searched high and low, but no luck. I can only pray for the best and hope he met a happy fate.
So, there's my little story. Hope you find your kitty!
I lost my beloved Bengal in February of this year. Her name was Takarra Tola and she was 7 months old when she died. It was my fault completely that we lost her and I still feel just awful about it. I was doing laundry and our washer was in the bathroom and the dryer was in my room. I took 1/2 the cloths out to throw them in the washer and went back for the rest of them. Takarra was sleeping on the cat tree in the living room and I never thought she might get in the dryer when I was switching cloths. She did though. I should have looked and I did check to see if the Siamese were on the bed, but I didn't look inside and see if any were inside or go see if she was on the cat tree before I hit the start button and left for my niece's birthday party. When I got home, she was already dead.
I still cry over it and think about what I could have or should have done differently. I miss her all the time, especially when I look at my two 5 month old Bengals. Takarra was a perfect cat and I wish every day that I could do that day over again.
If you read this, please think twice about things like the dryer that can quickly kill your sweet cat. It takes two seconds to look inside to make sure no one is in there. Trust me, two seconds is much better than a lifetime of pain and regret.
Chanda
my cat was 2 years
female
she never did come back
I got a call saying that they had found her dead at the side of the road and that they had buried her but I wasent allowed to see the grave. I believe they kept her.
she was both and indoor and outdoor cat. She always found a way out. She was also declawed and that was the last time I did that. I figure if a cat gets out they will need there claws for protection. I would put up flyers around the neighborhood with a pic of the cat and your telephone number. good luck in finding your lost baby!
I lived in Arizona... On the move out there I found a kitten at a gas station and "adopted" him... He always wanted to be outdoors since he was a wild cat, but he always came back at night. One day he didn't come back, and I never saw him again. He was about 9 months old when he vanished.
I don't know if he got hit by a car... If someone else took him in... We lived in the desert so it is possible he got eaten by a coyote, or a snake, or stung by a scorpion.
I wish you luck with your cat though. If your cat comes back you should consider getting a tracking implant chip... That way if someone finds him they'll know who he belongs to and will contact you.

Anyone use Orijen cat/dog food?

Hey everyone.. just wondering if anyone has ever used or heard of the product Orijen for cats and dogs?.. if so any good/bad things? i'm thinking of switching over to it.
website is http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/a... if anyone wants to take a look.
thanks muchly!
Answers:
They talk a good game, and it sounds like they have good intentions. But. It's still a dry food which isn't great as a diet staple. I don't feed any, but I wouldn't suggest feeding it as any more than 50% of a cat's total diet.
Deboned chicken, chicken meal (NOT GOOD), turkey meal(NOT GOOD), russet potato (NOT GOOD), lake whitefish (NOT REALLY GOOD), chicken fat, sweet potato (NOT REALLY GOOD), whole eggs (NOT REALLY GOOD),de-boned turkey, salmon meal (NOT REALLY GOOD), salmon and anchovy oils, salmon, natural chicken flavour, sunflower oil, sun-cured alfalfa, dried brown kelp, carrots, spinach, peas, tomatoes, apples, psyllium, dulse, glucosamine Hcl, cranberries, black currants, rosemary extract, chondroitin sulfate, sea salt.
The latter items all sound good and may even be good - but are just not all necessary.
If they offered a canned food as well you could go half and half.
I personally would consider choosing another brand such as Evo, Raw Instincts or Core - three grainless varieties. They too have undesirable ingredients because they're dry, but for dry food they're pretty good!
I don't use it I use California Natural for our cat ^__^
I originally started with the Acana Lite Cat Formula cat food by Champion Pet Foods (which is also a good food). When Orijen came out, I decided to try it. My cat loves it. She's an indoor cat and this food gives her good energy, her coat is really soft and shiny and she doesn't gain excess weight on it. I highly recommend it.

Anyone use Nature's Miracle cat litter??

I have been using this litter for about 1 week for my 2 new kittens. It is supposed to have great odor control, but I don't think it does. I am debating if I should try something new, like a regular clay litter. nature's miracle is made from corn cob. What does everyone else think?
Answers:
natures miracle.. GREAT product.. for stains.. NOT for litter..
seriously.. fresh step is the best i've tried.. and the one i always recommended when i worked at petco when i was younger.. honestly.. if its that bad.. mix the litter with regular baking soda.. it helps mask the odor
I have tryed all the expensive litters and the best one I have found is Fresh step cedar clummping litter!! I have 2 adult indoor cats and people always say that they did not even know I had a litter box! I do clean it once a week but still The litter works great!!
Yeah my kitten loves fresh step so much

Anyone own a devon rex cat? How much does one shed? are they a high energy breed?

Answers:
hello, how are you?? i'm truckerbuddyz, You?? i think the answer is not going to be by me cause i don't know and i want 10 points SSOOOOOO!! bad! so you could try googleing it, or something else?!?!?!???
I don't own one, but I subscribe to "cat age" on the internet, and they describe the Devon Rex as impish and mischievous, people loving, they say they do shed and are not hypoallergenic. Didn't say how much they shed, but that their short hair makes vacuuming easier. It sounds like a very nice cat. EDIT they said a Devon Rex could give Dennis the menace or Bart Simpson a run for their money.
Sorry, don't own one... but check out this link to find out more about the breed, including it's temperment and care.
I own Devon Rex and used to breed them. They are a high energy, playful breed, so shouldn't be kept as only cats. A pair is much more fun. They do calm down and mellow as they get older. The shedding is very minimal indeed. They are delightful cats.

Anyone out there with a small cat?

My tortie girl cat is small, about the size of a seven or eight month old kitten. The vet says some cats are just small. She weighs 7 pounds. She's just a mini cat. I kept expecting her to get big and she never did.
Answers:
Animals, even cats can be different sizes and shapes, just like humans. If she is healthy, happy and content, which I'm sure she is. There is nothing to worry about. I have had cats that never grew physically and stayed small, that was just their nature.
I don't have one personally, but a close friend of mine has a midget cat too. She is around 5 years now and about the weight of your cat. She also has no tail, so she looks even smaller- like the size of a rabbit.
i also have a female tortie and she is small. she is 6 now and seemed to grow a bit when she was 3 but she is still a small cat.
my friends tortie is small also but it's kittens were huge.
I have a small tortie..she is soo adorable. She was abused when a kitten and now she is better and she dosent hide alot. But she is still a brat at times.. like this morning, she purposly threw up her breakfast where I walk in the morning..eww lol
Yep I have a little calico who only weighs about 6 pounds. She's about half the size of my other cat.
Yea, one of our cats is very small, smaller then her baby! Her baby is really big though. But she is the tinniest in the house! Shes a tabby cat, very small, sweet and beautiful.Ours is about the size of a four month kitten, seriously! And shes two!
my white cat "patches" (who lived a long, healthy life) was TINY her whole life - at her peak she weighed about 6 pounds, and flucuated between 5-6 for most of her life..
just make sure that you watch her kidneys - i don't think its due to size, but thats how patches died when she got older..
I have a lot of cat( That are registered) but I have three small cats is 5 and the other is 6. and 7 All my cats are healthy two had to have their teeth removed. And three are so scared of company they never comes out when we have guests over. but are total love bus to me and my husband... But we love them all... Best of Luck.
My cat is a year old and is 6 pounds. Some cats are just smaller than others, like some people are smaller than others.
My cat Vicky is only 7lbs %26 she is 3. It is just normal for some cats to stay tiny.

Anyone out there have experience with pets who've gotten the big "C" from second hand smoke?

my kitten is 11 months old, he is so sweet.
one of my roommates smokes and I've told them I wish they wouldn't do it around my kitten however last week my worst fears came to life:
my kitten had a hacking episode so I took him to the vet. They did some tests and an examination, in the end they prescribed an antibiotic and said if that doesn't improve his breathing then they'll have to do an x-ray. They said they suspect cancer but they want to try this med before they do the x-ray
-I got a second opinion and they agreed
I know the best thing I can do is to put some air purifiers around the house, keep smoke free areas for the cat to hang out in, and groom him more often (so if he gets any residue in his fur, he won't ingest it during grooming)
I've worked with animals my whole life and I've faced death and disease many times; I'm even applying to college to become a vet tech..
yet, I'm scared
I love this cat..I just need some emotional support; does anyone else have a similar story?

Answers:
I think you should move out. Do you think your feline is the only one at risk? You saw it happen to him, so it could just as easily happen to you as well. Unless you stop this situation, you could end up just like your poor kitty there.
I doubt he got cancer from the second hand smoke as young as he is. If he is coughing, I would think he has asthma.
What made them think cancer? What did the blood work show?
The cancer is probably not caused by the smoke. since the kitten is only 11 months old the smoke couldn't have caused cancer that quickly. although I'm sure the smoke isn't great for its heath i doubt that it caused cancer.

Anyone knows where I could buy a baby cat (under 2 months)in Toronto?

Answers:
Don't buy one. Adopt one from an animal shelter. It should not be hard to find the nearest one. Just google it.
go to humane society (ospca ).
2 months is too young. You want a cat that has stayed with its mom until 3 months, 12 weeks. There are many behavioral problems associated with cats taken away too young.
Honestly, anyone who would sell a kitten that young should not be allowed to own a cat... actually they shouldn't be allowed to own a cat just for letting their cat breed when there are so many cats in the shelters.
Tey a shelter, they may have an abandoned litter, but you are just asking for problems with a cat that wasn't allowed to develope properly or learn alll the lessons its mom has to teach.
I would guess no. And if you could that would be a bad thing. Kittens need to stay with their mothers until three months to get proper socialization. And kittens younger than 2 months would require a great deal of care.
Your local animal shelter. Apply to be a foster home, if you know how to raise orphaned kittens. It's a 24/7 job, however, and you need to know what you're doing (though I'm sure your animal shelter will not allow you to foster if you have no clue). It's kitten season at the moment, and most shelters are having high numbers of pregnant mommas and orphans come in, and these are the cats that are euthanized if there's no foster homes available. So good for you, if fostering is something you're interested in.
If you just want a young kitten to play with and raise, and not waking up in the middle of the night to bottlefeed, then 8wks is the youngest you want, and I guarantee there's plenty of those at your local animal shelters. :-)
I agree. Adopt, don't buy. I disagree that two months is too young. I am in my sixties now and have spent most of my years around cats. All the best pets I have had were taken from their mothers very young. The very best was taken from her mother at birth, there were too many kittens and she was the runt, and hand fed. She lived for seventeen years.
OTOH a young kitten does require a great deal of time. So if you do not have it, or are not willing to spend it, do not get a young kitten.
And this is not to say that older cats cannot make fine pets, and sometimes they are the best if you do not have the time to raise and be with a cat that will be far more emotionally dependent upon you if you are all it has known.
Get one at your local animal shelter,
you can find one nearest to you in
your local phonebook in the pet's
section, or at www.yellowpages.com!!

Hope I Was Helpful!!!
2 months is the absolute youngest age to take a kitten away from his mother. anything under that is bad news. go to your local shelter %26%26 adopt a kitten.
Why would you want to buy one? There are tons of cats that people give away everyday that are young, fit and have all their shots and are even fixed. Look around and give an unwanted cat a good home. Good luck.
You can adopt a cat from your local animal shelter: here is their web address http://www.toronto.ca/animal_services/pe... They have pictures of the animals up for adoption on their webpage and information on their age. We adopted our first cat from the South services animal shelter. He was around 7 weeks old at the time of adoption (he had lost his mother at an early age which is the reason we were able to adopt him so young) and we paid around $150 in adoption fees.

Anyone know why my cat puts my hair scrunchies in a circle around her and cries in the middle of the night?

She also pulls tissues out of the wastebasket and does the same thing. I thought maybe she thought they were her babies because she never had any. I just feel sorry for her with noise she makes. It's so soulful. My vet has no clue.

Get a squirt gun, fill it with water, when you see those cats start to scratch, squirt them full in the face or butt with the water.
Unless they're completely stupid, they'll learn that scratch=squirt and they'll stop.
It's called aversion therapy.
www.Drsfoster%26smith. they have the spray you want. Also you can try something that smells like oranges for some reason cats hate the smell of oranges.
just get it a scratching post and train it to scratch that instead

http://www.cathobbyist.com/articles/scra...
but if you still want a cat repeller look at this
http://www.getridofgophers.com/cat-repel...
i know of go to a pet store and there is a pet spray that cats dont like just ask somone thats works at the store but beware sometimes cat like the smell so try it out at the store
any decent pet store would sell this
You can try Apple Cider (at any pet store). You can also try buying this tape like stuff at the pets store (my cats do not scratch on the spots that I have it... but I do not have it on the back of the couch where people's heads are... and my cats scratch when they get up from sleeping there). The tape is good for the corners of the couch. You can also try the cardboard scratch things for the corners as well. This is why I do not invest into good couches.
You can also clip their names or have them declawed (only if they are inside cats only).
A better alternative is to get your cat a scratching post and rub it generously with fresh catnip. I train my cats that the only 'toys' that are fair game are things I rub fresh catnip on. Notice I say 'fresh' catnip. It is much more aromatic and lets the cat know an item is their's. To keep the cat from ruining the furniture, you can get spray cans of deterrant from a local pet store. But I've never found one that consistantly keeps cats from scratching where they please. A good quality pepper spray usually does the job well, but some think it's cruel to put that strong an irritant where the cat can get at it. However, in my experience, they won't usually repeat the experience after the first encounter. If you want to use a commercially available no-scratch spray, I highly reccomend the following. It is the only one that I find works consistantly. This site also offers plastic strips that you can put on the corners of your furniture that deter scratching as they have a texture that cat's don't like (kind of like fingernails on a dusty chalkboard for humans). These devices are clear plastic and easily install on the corners where the cat likes to scratch. You can also put them up on wall corners for the same protection.

you mix a little vinegar (about 1 to 2 oz) in a spray bottle and fill with water, spray lightly where you don't want your cat Also keep a spray bottle with plain water and spray her lightly every time she scratches your furniture. both way worked for me. good luck and enjoy your pet's.
umm squirt bottle is a good idea..usually works
Look at the pet store for Boundary. It is a spray. It does smell awful, but once it is dry humans can't smell it any longer. However, cats and dogs can smell the residue, and will leave the area alone. It has worked on my cats.
this sounds rediculous but heres what i did: i taped aluminum foil to the arms of the couch where mine would scratch and they were scared of it!! the noise it made when they scartched and seeing their reflection freaked them out. after a couple days they didnt even try to scratch anymore and after about 2 weeks i took it off. now they stay away from scratching there all together and i dont have metallic furniture anymore! =) sad but true i must say
at petco they have spary called BITTER SPRAY buy that and put it on the furniture. it really works.
Buy them a scratching post if they dont already have one.take a look on ebay, there may be something on there.
http://www.ebay.co.uk
Or look in your local pet store, they should have something there.
We had the same problem with our cat. Try rubbing either lemon juice or citronella (from chemists or health shops) into the furniture with a kitchen towel 3 or 4 times a week.
It's worked wonders for us!
PS. As others have said, get a scratch post too.
Get a jar of catnip (they sell it in poundland) and rub it into a scratching post or piece of carpet pinned to the back of the door. This should encourage them to scratch where YOU want them to scratch. I also think a spray bottle with water in and spray a very fine mist into their face when scratching on the furniture.
there is a prodcut called No Scratch, just spray it on anything you don't want them clawing on. i had to use it on my curtains when i caught my tabby climbing them, that was months ago. i sprayed with the No Scratch, he eyes it but doesn't climb it anymore.
try your local Walmart, or pet store. i've seen it at both places.
I would try going to your local pet store and asking them for the spray that is called "Bitter Apple" cats don't like it and it won't harm your furniture. Next I would try your vets office they might be able to suggest some different products. Good Luck!

Anyone know of any persian/himilayan cat breeders in scotland?

With kittens available soon pref.?
Answers:
You could check out the below links and contact the scottish cat associations to find a responsible breeder with kittens on the way.
http://www.noreastcatclub.co.uk/...
http://www.westofscotlandcatclub.co.uk/...
http://www.gccfcats.org/ (British, but they would have members in Scotland too)
Online listing of catteries:
http://www.catbreeder.co.uk/longhair.htm...
Now, I don't know any of those breeders personally, so I have no clue whether they take their hobby serious enough, but just to help you out, some links to catteries:
http://www.jenzjewels.co.uk/index.php...
http://www.tiarazkiss-persians.co.uk/...
http://www.nirokepersians.co.uk/...
http://www.kittiq-persians.co.uk/...
http://www.lsleigh.homestead.com/homepag...
They in turn have more links to other catteries, etc.
Don't forget to ask for the parents' PKD (very very important!) and HCM test results!
Please don't be in a rush either, be selective of who your companion for life is born with, for the parents temperaments and the environment they grow up/live in (f.i. not caged)
Good luck!
look in your local animal shelter for a persian/himalayan kitten.
I have had a georgous kitten just 4 weeks ago from one of those breeders (tiaraz kiss) and not only is she stunning she is so well behaved and good natured. The breeder (Cathy) is also wonderful i would recomend useing them and i know she has kittens due soon. Good luck finding a kitten, persians are amazing!

Anyone know if this is bad for my cat or is it no problem?

k so my cat has like black stuff on his gums, uhm is this bad or is this nothing, how can clean it if its cleanable and if i need to clean it?thanks
Answers:
it is quite normal for some cats to have areas of black pigmentation on the lips and gums. Providing there is no inflammation or ulceration or bleeding here, and the visible surface is smooth, you should have nothing to worry about.
Sounds like you need to bring her to the vet and have a dental cleaning>
the black on the gums could be caused by dental problems, but if it is the gum color, it could also be a sign of aging. How old is your cat? I know that with dogs, as they age, their gums will change color, usually brown or black. Is your cat's breath bad? That's a good way to tell if it's their dental hygiene causing the coloration. GL
my cat "bobie" had black spots on her gums that were simply colorings..
you should get checked at vet... but it could be nothing.
gosh... that cat was great...miss her.
she was white with black spots. (enter the black spots on her gum).
good luck
Sounds like your cat has taking up chewing tobacco.
P
That means the cat has gum disease. Take it to the vet. You can't do anything about it yourself.
It's not disease. It's just pitment. It's like african americans have black gums sometimes. Nothing to worry about at all.
All 3 of my cats have that and nothing bad has happened to them for 2 years now. when i first noticed that i thought it wasn't something bad. if it was something bad, you would notice something going on with his mouth. if he isn't eating in any way, then take him to the vet. this reminds me of when my cat "Snickers" broke his leg.

Anyone know if Tapioca Pudding (non-fat) is bad for Kittens? My cat really likes it.?

Answers:
HaHa!! No, it's okay. Just not a lot. After a little bit just take it away. My kittens get so excited about food! They're new on the planet, and exploring everything including the good smells coming from my dinner plate!
Human food is not good for the cats or kittens because they can get sick.
Different cats like different human foods. Sure he likes the pudding! I once had a cat that loved green peas. My Domino loves Cream of Wheat, scrambled eggs, roast beef from the deli, dumplings, pizza. I suppose they get tired of Friskies!

Anyone know anything about Feline Herpes? I think my kitten may have it.?

His eyes have discharge that comes and goes, as well as congestion. He has been on and off antibiotics for the past two and a half months, but it doesn't seem to help his symptoms.
Answers:
I have 2 cats that have feline herpes, one will have flare ups a couple of times a year. ask your vet to put him on azithromicin (sp?) that works best.
also go to walmart in the vitamin and supplment section and get some L-Lysine and give your cat 500-1000mg of that per day this stuff helps to keep the herpes virus from replicating. you can't overdose them on this.
you can also give cats benadryl (I will ask that for this you ask your vet for proper dosage I wouldn't want to give you what I give my cats and have it be too much or anything)
if you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.
that could be URTI - upper respiratory tract infection...
like a cold in people ...
if caused by a virus the antibiotics wont help - its like a cold in people.. keep him indoors untill he recovers, which can take a while...
use a stainless steel bowl for food and water - NOT PLASTIC which can recontaminate him
A lot of kittens get runny eyes, it's usually just a cold type reaction, and with congestion too I assume he's just a bit under the weather, what makes you think he has herpes? You say he's been on and off antibiotics, but is he taking the full course? It's important for him to finish his course of antibiotics even if he stops showing symptoms. Take him to a different vet to get a second opinion.
We have had a lot of success treating these cats with L-Lysine...that you can find at most any drug store. Crush the pill and add it once daily to the cats canned food. It really helps many of these cats. We have never had any side effects either.
Herpes infection makes cats more vulnerable to infection, as well as herpes virus outbreaks in the eye. It is fairly common in cats, and there is a treatment called Idoxuridine 0.1% drops. It is fairly affordable, around $80 for 15mL (after markup, at least that's what it is through us). The drops are an antiviral that is pretty effective against herpes virus, and when treated every day the infection will stay under control.
Talk to your vet about trying out some antivirals, or ask for a referral to an animal eye specialist for further diagnostics.
I fostered a cat with the exact same symptoms and that was what the vet finally came up with as an explanation. They checked him for nasal polyps, etc and Herpes was the last explanation for his chronic upper respiratory infections.
I used Enisyl, which is a lysine supplement, in the gel form. It seemed to help. When we had him neutered, we knew it was going to cause a flare-up, so we just put him on antibiotics as he recovered.
As the kitten gets older, the flare ups should reduce. He had a flare-up when he was adopted out, but the adopter was a very understanding a patient woman who knew he had medical issues.
His new owner reports that the flare-ups are few and far between now that he is older and are most likely due to stress (he gets them whenever she travels out of town for more than a day or two.)
It does not appear that he has transmitted it to any of the other cats he has lived with, but all were older and very healthy when they met him.
I don't know anything, but if it turns out this is what your cat has, you can join these Yahoo groups.

Anyone know any good Flea & Tick drops for my cat besides Frontline? Trying to find a cheaper alternative!

Has anyone ever had any problems with Purscriptions Plus Squeeze on Flea %26 Tick drops by Sentry? I put it on my cat and he broke out in a bad rash on the back of his neck, I had to bath him, and you know how cats hate water. Frontline seemed to work before but it is too expensive. Anyone know of other brands that work well that will not make him break out, and where can I get them?
Answers:
I use Revolution. I get it at my Vet's. It cost's $10.00 an application and if you buy three, you get one free. I like it because it covers fleas, ticks, ear mites and different worms including heartworms.
Unfortunately, pets are expensive...
Try advantage for cats. We have 5 cats and use it on all of them. I dunno if it's cheaper tho, but don't try hartz, thatll kill ur cat. U can go to petshed.com and they'll ship it to u. or u could go to ur vets and they'll probably have there. Good luck w/ ur search!!
There is a pill you can get for your cat, i can't remember what its called but it kills the flea as soon as they bite your after you cat has had the pill, its cheeper than the liquid stuff.
You could try natural products such as lavender or adding a small amount of garlic to pet food. You can look up natural solutions on the web to get more information.
Advantage by bayer.
research on line prices.
There is another one which you put into their food.
My cats didn't like it.
Use FL or ADV. Buy online at best price you can find.
Coming from Australia or Canada is no problem on import.
Best price is always 6 month or 1 year.
Do your research online and learn about fleas.
You will not need to treat animals during winter when it's raining.
To treat a stubborn cat.
Warm a towel in the microwave. wrap the cat in the towel tightly then expose the back of the neck and treat him/her.
Then pet the animal severely and slowly release the animal
To run away and sulk.
After about three months they learn and stop fighting, usually.
Some never stop fighting so you must trap them in a small room. Where ever the cat box is or where you feed them.
Since fleas/when wet.canna swim.. fill tub to underbelly and added or spray vinegar straight on the coat and then shampoo with regular shampoo. since we're tresemme' fanatics we bathe our cats in the same... walah! no fleas/cheap..and add asprinkle of table pepper to ur cats wet food diet once a week.. pepper in the bloodlines deterrs fleas and mange from cats and dogs.. regular haus pepper.yeah once a week for the rest of theyre lives a sprinkle of pepper for the fleas N coats...and also the worms HATE pepper.

Anyone have their cat cremated?

Did you do anything with the ashes?
Answers:
Yes we did. He's in the little white square box we were given, we didn't do anything with the ashes (actually they're bone fragments not ashes). He's on our book case. It hurts too much for me to open the box, but my significant other wanted to keep him.
I have not had a animal cremated yet but will deffinitely will be cremating my bottle fed cat that is now 4 years old and he will be buried with me when I die. I love him to death and he loves me. The first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was me so we have a incrediable bond. Thats my plan!!
I've had special pets cremated. When I did so, the company made me a plaster "paw print" to keep, gave a certificate with it, and gave me the ashes in a nice wooden box with a nameplate of the pet on it, and a little padlock to keep unwanted hands out of the box. It's definitely worthwhile if you want to do it and can afford it. Usually the cost goes by the pets weight.
We buried her ashes in our yard and got a little marker with her name on it.
I never had a cat cremated, but I did have my dog cremated. I have his ashes in an urn that looks like a fire hydrant with a picture of him on the outside of it.
I loved that guy and I also got a tattoo of him when he passed away.
we had our boxer cremated. He's still in the box we got from the creamatory. My daughter takes tehbox down once in awhile andlooks at it, it makes her feel better.
I had my dog and rabbit cremated. They were given back to me in beautiful carved wooden boxes. They also gave me both pets paw prints in a light weight cement as well as cut a lock of their hair and put that in separate beautiful stone boxes with inlay colored stones in a soft flower pattern. So beautiful as well as very much appreciated. Right now I have my pets in a private area of my house which is lined in velvet. I put in my Will that I want them buried with me when the time comes. Making a decision like this whether it is a pet or a loved one that was cremated is very personal. Just as long as the ashes are safe, take all the time you need to make up your mind as to their final resting place. Good Luck!
I bury my cats. that way I can visit but not see it every second of every day. If I had my cat cremated and kept the ashes I think i'd be sad all the time.
I had my cat cremated at a vet hospital that does individual cremations. I chose this place very carefully.
I was very torn between choosing cremation or burying my cat at the pet cemetary operated by the vet hospital. I decided that I was more comfortable with the cremation. I have her ashes in a beautiful handmade stained glass urn. The urn has an inscription on it and holds her photo behind glass. Above the area that holds the ashes is a place to hold small keepsakes; I have a clipping of her fur (I took this clipping before she was euthanized) and a couple of her whiskers that I had saved from when she was alive. I still miss her very much, and having her ashes with me brings me comfort.
My cat previous to that cat was buried in my parents' backyard.
Are you trying to make a decision? I can answer any questions you have.
Yeah, you can. My dog was cremated.
Yes, we had our cat, "Piglet", cremated. He was a very special guy and it just seemed wrong to have him disposed of by the vet.
He's in an urn in my top drawer.
He lived on a shelf in the livingroom for a while. We have a great picture of him and his urn sat just behind the photo. Unfortunately, he's not safe there since our son was born. Our son is a WILD MAN and a future mountaineer. Piglet would have loved him.
Someday, when we find just the right spot, we may scatter his ashes. Or when my son settles down, he'll probably go back on the shelf with his photo.
Geeze I miss that guy.
I did not even know that you could have you pet cremated. I have heard of people stuffing them, putting them in the ground, but never have I heard of this one. Cool idea though! As far as what would I do with the ashes, I think I would just let the wind take them to wherever they wanted to go.
If you have had your cat cremated, my heartfelt condolences to you. I have just gone thru this myself.
I had my beloved Maybelle cremated but I haven't done anything with her cremains yet. They are still in the box from the crematory. It has only been two weeks since she crossed the bridge.
I, too, want to have my cats and dog (Chihuahua) buried with me when I die. So I am trying to come up with a unique way to keep them, but maintain each pets individuality. My plans for now are to copy a picture and tape to the box Maybelle's cremains are in. The crematorium here has a blue velour bag that is embroidered with "Till we meet at the Bridge". I am not sure if I will go back and get one of those and personalize it with her name and dates or if I am going to make one myself.
I have also been looking on eBay at a couple of different styled urns. The first is an angel with cats, the number is 110137003603, and the second is a rotating picture urn, number 200069012691, if you want to see them.
There are so many choices for urns or other memorial keepsakes. There are the standard urns in wood, glass, ceramic, stone, etc, and most can be personalized. Then there are urns designed especially for pets. The service here even has an urn that looks like a mantel clock.
You can get jewelry in many shapes that hold a small amount of cremains. You can even have gems (zircons) made using some of the cremains. You can have some of the cremains blown into glass...some for jewelry and some as globes for display.
Maybelle had been ill for over 2 years and I have another cat that is diabetic, so I started planning, because I knew when the time came I would be in no shape to make any logical decisions.
I hope these links give you some ideas.
Purrs and Prayers
I had my cats ashes cremated through the company my vet is affiliated with. the ashes came in a small wooden box with a padlock on it and a certificate of authenticity. its a simple box but it came with a beautiful poem on the certificate. i keep it on a bookshelf next to a picture of her and her buddy cat (who's still living) with her collar hanging on it. i thought about burying the ashes in the backyard, but i feel nice knowing she's nearby... that and sometimes my current cat will paw at the picture of the two of them.

Anyone have experience with the cleaner SCOE 10X? Does it really work as well as they say to clean cat urine?

I purchased a house and the previous owners had a cat that urinated in the basement. The carpet and padding has been removed. I'm looking for something to clean the smell from the cement floor and a couple of other spots. The testimonials from the SCOE 10X web site sound great, but I would like to hear from people who have had success with this product. It is hard to know how credible testimonials on the products site really are.
Answers:
Hi there...I haven't personally tried SCOE 10X and there doesn't seem to be enough documentation to substantiate whether or not it is effective. However, I have personally tried many other odour enzyme neutralizers and found the best one which works is called Nature's Miracle Just for Cats (not plain Nature's Miracle). It's an enzymatic neutralizer which works by breaking down urine proteins by thoroughly soaking the areas affected and allowing to air dry. Repeated applications are necessary for heavily soiled areas. Flooring/sub-flooring will require extra solution so consider buying the Gallon size to achieve the results. If it is deep into the concrete you will need to use bleach as well.
Nature's Miracle Just For Catsproduct info: http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_d...
We've tested nearly all enzyme neutralizers available in the marketplace for our exotic cats which have stronger urine than domestic cats and found that Nature's Miracle Just for Cats has always worked the best.

Anyone have any crazy cat stories such as your cat doing something & blaming you for it by giving evil looks?

My cat once was in a real lovey mood and was rolling around my bed trying to get my attention and proceeded to roll herself off the bed and then she jumped back up on the bed and gave me the evil look like it was my fault even though I wasn't even touching her when she did it. She is 5 years old and knows where the bed ends and begins. I was wondering if any one else had some crazy stories to share with about thier cats
Answers:
Wow! The same thing happened to my cat, but she was on a desk! Wow.
I have so many stories I could tell, but heres one of them;
Anyway, I heat up some nice Pop-Tarts to a nice, cool degrees, and then I leave them on a plate and go back to the kitchen to check on something. I comeback, and what do you know?! My cat had eaten like half of it or something. I still feed her some once in a while.
Also I have blankets on my desk so that she can sleep there and not on my documents.
Hope the story made you laugh!
I recently added 2 kittens to my family. One of my cats that was here first, Willow, didn't even lay on me for weeks! She gives me evil looks when I'm paying attention to one of the my newest. She also gets along unless they are on my lap with me. In that case, she swats them away.
well my cat likes to play with the red seal on the milk jug.he also chases things that aren't even there looks at me then runs away i guess it's his way of entertaining his self.
Cats then to do that, my cat gets mad for no reason at all, sometimes i just look at him and he jumps at me and tries to bite, I even have to put a bell on him because he got in the habit of jumping at me while i was sleeping just because I moved under the covers hahaha, but the bell and spraying water when he did that fixed the problem.
One nite, after just getting a new kitten, while working on the computer. My kitten came to me with a runny nose. (had a small cold). after cleaning him up I told him He needed to learn how to keep his face clean. My older cat must have heard. She had not given him any attention before this (we had the kitten only a few days) Next thing I knew she had him pinned and was washing him.
My cat will give me a evil look after an earthquake like I shook the house.
My cat will loose her toys and meow with this pitifull voice like she was crying, untill I go and find all of her toys (mind you one toy is not good enough she wants all of them)
She also insults my cooking. By not eating it but eating paper and plastic instead. It's like she is saying "I'd rather eat paper then human food."
It's funny that I should read this post today. Last night I sat at the table working on some crafts. I had just put a load of laundry in the washer when Fluffy (not even six months old) jumped up on the washer. When the washer changed cycles she jumped and gave me that dirty look, like I did it. I just laughed at her and said to her "I told you not to get up there". A few seconds later, I looked up just in time to see her slip off the front of the washer and try to catch herself with her claws. Well it didn't work, she fell into a pile of clothes, and again I got the dirty look.
Yeah my two cats will do something stupid like that..and i personally dont think theyre blaming ME when they give me a look..i think they give me the look because im laughing at them or theyre embarassed..lol

Anyone have a problem with their cat jumping in the babys crib etc?

I am 8 mos pregnant and have 1 male cat who is 1 yr old. So far he seems to obey well (except lately he's been a little bad- we moved to a new place %26 that could be why- stress etc). So my question pertains to my concern about if he may somehow jump into the babys crib while she's sleeping and possibly suffocate her. He already jumped from a box onto her changing table once and grabbed an item of hers in the middle of the night and I found it the next morning on the bathroom floor). I don't want to put up a protective tent or shut her in her room, so I'm hoping it won't be a problem. 1st time mom and 1st time cat owner... Ahh!
Answers:
that is a myth cats do not smother babies
keep the cat in a certain room,
collar,
put butter on your cats paws, then when you let it out it will find its way home, and then you can let the cat out at night time so then you can leave the door open, or put the cat in the kitchen?
I would find the cat another home. Better safe than sorry.
Wow...so whoever thumbs downed me would rather put their baby at risk of suffocation or allergy problems? Shame shame shame.
Its a human life we're talking about here. And a fragile newborn at that!
Well, all bets are off in this case...get a spray bottle, set it on 'stream', and use it to correct him. He's young and very curious.
Remember, too, that sometimes the more you say "don't go there" the more appealing the area becomes.
Let him explore some %26 ignore him for now he might keep doing it if you always react, for attention.
You should be fine.
that is adorable!
your cat is an evil turd who is out to kill your innocent baby...jk
You can hang a regular screen door on the baby's room if the cat insists on going in.
Cats smothering babies is a myth.
Your cat will be curious, but cautious of the new person in your home, watch to see how he interacts and go from there.
I've known some people who put a screen door up in the babies room, then the door is closed to the pets in the home, but they can see and hear everything that is going on in the babies room, perhaps that would work for you also.
your cat is just curious about all the new things in the house. No cats do not suffocate kids, that's an old myth that never really happened.
The best thing really to do is to keep your cat and child separated if you're not able to keep an eye on them. You do not want either to accidentally hurt the other.
Personally we closed the door and used a baby monitor. My son would nap in the living room and I could keep an eye on all of them.
Both my cats have had their tails pulled many times by my son. They're the best of friends though.
The myth that everone is talking about is an old wives tale that if you let a cat and baby sleep in the same room the cat will lay on the baby and steal its breath away. When your cat jumps in the crib make a noise that scares him (from next to the crib...you dont want to scare him back into the crib), and if you feel that you need to, shake the crib. This is not nessesary (especially since youre pregnant), but can help. Very soon he will think the crib is the scariest think in "his" house. Instead of making a noise you could also get a can half full of coins, beans, rice, ect and shake it.

Anyone have A diva Cat?

My cat is a Diva, and thinks that when my son isn't home she needs all my time. Anyone else have that problem?
Answers:
A Queen (female cat) isn't a cat unless she's a Diva or she wouldn't be a cat. All the best;~)
No but I have a Diva Dog. Ginger kinda reminds me of how a cat would act. She acts prissy and for a dog she is very dramatic. Its actually kinda funny
You're looking at her. She's not needy in the same way yours is, but she INSISTED that we shell out the bucks for modeling and acting classes, plus a voice coach. She's planning on being a triple threat.
On the rare occasions her busy schedule allows her to be home, it's all dash here and run there, jump over this, be afraid of that, mess with my sister....

Anyone figured out how to reuse Softpaws?

I have been putting them on my cat for 3 or 4 months and they are working pretty well. I was just wondering if anyone has figured out a way to dissolve the old glue on them after they fall off...I find them everytime they fall off, so I have a bunch of old ones with glue in them, and I would hate to keep spending $20 to order new ones when these would work just fine! A new tube of glue is only $2, so I would much rather order that! Any ideas are welcome...thanks!
Answers:
Perhaps better to teach your kitty not to scratch what you dont want scratched. If it is furniture a spray bottle filled with water will discourage her. Keep it on Spray. To a cat it seems like another cat is hissing at them and is a very strong message without hurting the cat.
If it is humans that she is scratching, immediately stop playing with her and walk away.
And be all means definitely get her a scratching post.
I would never use softpaws on my cats, they know when their primary self defense is compromised. And of course they would have them chewed off if necessary.
My furniture doesnt have a single scratch on it either.
i would say that maybe you can try a little bit of nail polish remover on a q tip and cleanout the tips

Anyone ever had a kitten that wouldn't eat?

A stray cat I rescued had 3 kittens on June 12th. #1 %26 #2 started eating watered-down kitten food between 4 %26 5 weeks old %26 now eat it dry. #3 - the runt of the litter - is still nursing. He will eat a little bit of canned food sometimes, but won't eat kitten food, wet or dry. He's about 1/3 the size of the other two kittens. He's very healthy/active/etc., he just won't eat. Is this normal? He was separated from mama kitty for 5 days (and had to be force-fed the whole time). I finally broke down %26 brought him back home to nurse a while longer.
Answers:
Don't listen to ANYONE who says kittens should be 8 weeks before taken from their mothers. I have rescued 4 week old kittens and they were fine to eat wet food. It may be the fact that he's smaller and developing slower. You might want to let him nurse a few more weeks. You should also take him to the vet as it could also be caused by FIV/FeLV. I recently had a kitten that wasn't growing and I had to put him to sleep because he had FeLV.
yes.
kittens shouldn't be taken from their mother until they are a LEAST 8 weeks old. kittens still nurse from their mother til then. why was he separated from mom at such a young age? if you started separating them at 4 or 5 weeks you denied them essential time with their mother so she can teach them how to control their urges of biting and rough play. get mom fixed as soon as possible please.
I'd take him to the vet if I were you. Scince he's the runt, I'd say he'll eat a little later than the others. Let him nurse for awhile. You didn't include the age. My 5 wk old kitten love wet food. But sometimes it can take up to 8 wks. That's how long a mother usualy feeds her babies. But if you try mixing kitten replacement milk with wet food, mabey he'll learn! Just give him awhile longer than the others because he's the runt! Good luck.
NO. when my cat was 8 weeks old he used to eat like a pig.

Anyone else's cat terrified of aluminum foil?

Just curious. I have a cat that takes off running and hides anytime I get out aluminum foil. I feel bad every time I need to use it.
Answers:
My cat runs every time we take out a new garbage bag to put into the trash can. It's mostly the noise. Cats often have more than one noise they react to. My cat is also terrified of our vacuum and of the sound of aluminum foil being ripped by the box. I wonder what it sounds like to him that he get so anxious? Maybe there's a primitive nerve in their auditory system that is used for protection in the wild but becomes sensitive to their home even when domesticated.
I found the article below very informative.
mabie, but my dog is!
my cat does too.
she doesnt like the sound as its loud and shes scared of any loud noises. also i dont think she likes it as it kind of reflects and she hates any type of mirror
Yes, it is a common fear! Some people put it on their kitchen counters to keep the cats off.
My cat hates it, too. It worked to train him from hopping on the counter tops and furniture. It's the sound the tin foil makes when it's scrunched up that annoys them...
I must own a freak of a cat, any time we have sweets/cakes with foil or take out the tinfoil my cat goes into "pounce" position, she waits for it to be scrunched up into a ball and thrown so she can play fetch.
yes our 2 cats are also afraid of aluminum foil.
what we do is at xmas time we put it under the xmas tree under the skirt it keeps them from playing in and under the tree it workes
I have heard this before. I have never had a problem with this though, actually my cat like to play with it.

Anybody knows A LOT about Golden Retrievers?

I need to know which kind of Golden Retriever is the one that keeps a stylish, young-looking face even until it grows old. Because there is one type of Golden Retriever that has more of falling face, and drools a bit; specially as they grow older. OK, I need to know which type is the first one. It's also normally very light gold colour shade and it doesn't drool as much as the other one. Thanks
Answers:
There is a single breed that is a Golden Retriever but there are different 'lines' that create different dogs. There are two basic types:
American Field Bred: Taller, Leaner, often redder.
British: Stockier, shorter, often a lighter, cream color.
These are just broad generalizations and there are many variations including the very light cream colored Goldens that appear to be almost white.
All Goldens drool somewhat especially in the presence of food. The lighter goldens will probably appear to age more slowly as their white hairs will blend in with their regular coat. The darker, more reddish goldens will show their white hairs more distinctly which is probably what you are thinking about.
In looking for a Golden, make sure you spend the time and effort looking for a well bred one. There are so many of them that some lines are excessively aggressive and will cause you no end of problems.
Also remember that Goldens shed profusely and will happily run into water, mud and bring back lots of burrs and debris. You will have to bathe them or have them professionally groomed frequently if you want to keep your house really clean.
Otherwise, you can simply get used to having hair appear pretty much everywhere.
Goldens are wonderful dogs but you really should look for solid health (hips, eyes) and temperament above all else.
NO!
mmm, well i have a Golden retriever and he's the kind that doesn't have the droopy face /drool and he's 6 years old. I think thats the characteristics of a true pure bread goldy.
first of all it shouldnt matter what type of dog u get, you should love it no matter what, and second, there are no types of golden retrievers, i have one and he is not light light but almost, and he drools only when hot and he is old so he is starting to get white around his face, but he is still the same loveable energetic dog. everyone loves him even strangers that see him cuz he is so friendly
What are you talking about? golden retriever are golden retrievers. Every dog of the same breed has unique features of its own, which can NEVER be duplicated in another dog. You are asking for the impossible.
Check out the differences between the Golden Retriever and the Golden lab.
My lab is 16 years old. His hair has lightened up and he is loosing some teeth but he still looks just the same. And he does not drool.
The curly coated retriever is the one you're on about, but all retrievers seem to look older than their years after puppy hood. I've had Golden Retrievers in the past and none have drooled, but they all tend to look like old men and women after puppy hood. Hope this helps and have a nice evening.
All dogs drool you fool
why is this in cats?
i love golden retrievers ive always wanted one! but rents said no =(
Why are you asking this in the 'cat' section?
Golden Retrievers are good dogs to have. I thought this is the cats forum.
golden retrievers are not cats, go the dog section and ask that question
Only if it looks like a dog.
try putting this in the dog or pets section, this one is for cats

Anybody know of a vet that will be willing to help with the costs of a stray cat that i am willing to keep.?

Answers:
go to RSPCA website, they havecentres around the country that can help with costs of bills
Contact the humane society or other animal group. They usually have vets that donate their time and the fees are relative low. Thank you for being so considerate of our furry friends.
most vets will help you in some way just be freindly
Vets will only do things for money, generally large amounts of it .
I do, but you probably dont want to go to another state to see him, so go to your nearest animal hospital and bring your stray cat there.
Hi there,
If you are recieving certain benefits, you may be able to get help from the PDSA ( http://pdsa.org.uk )
Alternatively, I would visit your locat Cats Protection League / RSPCA shelter ( http://www.catchat.org/adoption... ) who may be able to provide vouchers and discounted or free vetinary care for your new cat.
Just make sure that you can afford to keep the stray cat before you make a decision - you'll need pet insurance too :-)
xx Emmie
I don't think vets help with the costs...
The only vets i know that do this are associated with animal hospitals such as the RSPCA, the Blue Cross and the PDSA. I don't think they will treat your pet for free but their costs are considerably lower than a private vets. When you take your cat along to one of these organisations, tell them that you have given this stray a home and they might waive the initial treatment fee, which at the RSPCA is about 拢10.00. Well done for giving the cat a good home, thats very decent of you. I'm sure it will bring you lots of love and affection.
Most vets will help just ask.
If you're going to keep it, are you going to expect the vet to pay for the food and litter that cat is going to use?
You don't mention your location, but if you are in the UK, the following organisations can help out with vet bills;
RSPCA
Blue Cross
Cat Protection League
If you are in the London area, the Celia Hammond Trust has vet clinics in Lewisham and Canning Town.
The link below, has a map that you can click to find welfare centres in your area.
http://www.catchat.org/adoption/index.ht...
Thanks for offering a stray cat the chance to know what it is to have a loving home - he will be eternally grateful to you.
you may need low cost animal services but no vet is going to just do a free handout. Anyone thinking that is being delusional. There are low cost spay and neutering programs as well as low cost vaccinations at various animal clinics including major retailers such as Pet Supplies Plus and Petco but no one is just going to do things for free. Animal rescue organizations are overburdened themselves because of the volume of animals in their care due to us humans failing to spay and neuter and continuing to breed animals senselessly to line our own wallets.
I also found a stray kitten who was in very bad condition and had many problems and we rang the RSPCA to see if they could take her but we decied we wanted to keep her and then the RSPCA payed for the vets fees scince we'd kept her! Now she has no problems at all, and she is a very healthy cat! Good luck.
Try the blue cross, they should be able to help, and they only ask for a donation as apposed to a set vets price.
The RSPCA or the Blue Cross should be able to help you with this, local animal shelters or Humane Societies may also be willing, but the Blue Cross are a sure thing, and I guess the RSPCA are too.
All depends on where in the world you are. Here in UK its not so bad finding help, If you are on a low wage in our area Cats Protection League are a great help, not saying they will buy all pcats food but when you need em for other stuff they will help out. Then there is the RSPCA, PDSA and local vets.
But if you are not in the UK, this answer is useless.
Good on you,
Try the Cats Protection League or Caring for Cats, both excellent Cat Charities.
If you are on a means tested benefit you can call the P.D.S A. ( Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals) They just ask for a donation about 拢10.00 I believe.
if you get in touch with your local cat protection league they will either try and help you or put you in contact with someone who will.
You can ask your vets about a payment plan or you can contact one of the many cat charities that will help you if you're on a low income, such as the Blue Cross, the PDSA, the Cats Protection League and ask your vet about other locak charities as every area has some.
Hope this helps.

Anybody know how to get rid of stray cats from the backyard?

Answers:
Put food out in your neighbors yard when they are not looking.
get dogs
put anti-freeze in a can of Tuna
pet repellent. get a dog.
Well you could: get a dog, build a fence, keep scaring it away, or get some anti-cat spray if there is such a thing!
dont feed em and eventually they will go away.i fead these 2 wild cats that came in my yard like a idiot and now their are 15 of them.
Yeah you should probably get dogs. lol
They make sprays that you can use on grass that leaves an odar and should keep them away. Also, make sure your not leaving foor or water out, or you could always get a dog.
I used moth balls if you can handle the smell. The spray the pet shops sell is very unpleasant!
Electric fence? Dog? Otherwise you're probably stuck with them. I've heard that using mothballs will keep them out of your flower beds and definitely fresh mulch helps with that. Make sure to board up any little places where they might decide to have a litter of kittens! Also, the local animal shelter will probably loan you a cage and you can catch them and take them to the animal shelter.
put out lots of water!!
Two words bear traps.
ANimal control and lots of mothballs
The HUMANE way: get a live trap.
Ammonia
Do not listen to these totally inhumane people who say to poison them. That could get you arrested and fined. Not to mention, make them suffer. You could just call animal control. They will come get them. Unless you are in a really remote place, most cities will get them from a little way outside the city limits. Or find a farmer needing mousers.
You could always call the pet control people. They come by here all the time and get stray dogs and cats. It isn't that bad of a thing since they take them to the pound and they give them some time to see if someone wants to adopt them..
You should stop feeding them, don't leave any water out.
Do not put antifreeze in tuna, if someone saw you doing that you could go to jail for animal cruelty, Plus it is just plain wrong. If you do that, you will pay a huge azz fine and spend atleast 45 days in jail in most states.
Call the animal control.

Anybody know and good websites that sell kittens?

I need a new kitten and i am going to look at the RSPCA and Blue Cross but if i dont see one does anybody know a website.
xxx
Answers:
http://www.petfinder.com
Ask at your local vets for animal rescue centres.
go to petfinder.com and find one at your nearest animal shelter...that's how I've come to have my two beautiful kitties
Um, if there was a website with people advertising kittens, I'd be scared.
Go to petfinder.org if you're looking for one.
Oh yes, try www.petfinder.org
There are several kittens there that need good homes! You can search within your area within a certain mile radius and specify the animal and age. There is typically a small adoption fee, but often it will cover the spay/neuter and some vaccinations. Good luck! :)
Look in your local paper in the classifieds. There will usually be a listing for free kittens or kittens up for adoption. Also, try your local shelters and non-profit no-kill shelters first. There are tons of kittens right now in my area, I'm sure there are in yours too.
look in your local petsmart, they have ads up
get one from the charity near you. kittens dont belong in the post.
I would try craigslist.com
you can list things you want to sell in your local area. or you can post free ads usually in your local paper and most of the time they have a website.
aw don't buy one over the net when you can save one from a rescue centre x
Hi there! If you have Pet Smarts in your area, I highly recommend going there on a Saturday...usually every Saturday they will have some kind of adoption thing going on. I got my cat there when she was only 8 weeks old.she is now 2. I got her from a rescue society (they found her and her brothers and sisters in a dumpster!) and the proceeds went to Hurricane Katrina relief so I thought it was meant to be...and I was looking for a dog lol. I'm still glad I got her, she is such a joy in my life! Enjoy your new kitten!
http://www.rspca.org.uk/servlet/satellit...
Try them.
There will be a large choice a your rescue centre. Do not go near pets marts. If you were to be able to buy a cat from a web site it would not be a good idea as you would not be able to assess the personality of the animal. So definitely rescue centre way to go . Anyway you should not find it hard to find a kitty that you like, so I hope you have many happy years together.
Try your local cat protection league- they have so many kittens that need a home. Go on to the website which will tell you where your nearest one is. miaow xxx
yeah buy one off the internet and have it shipped in a small little box from china
Go to your local Cats Protection adoption centre or branch -- they'll have lots of cats and kittens for you to choose from (They're in the phone book) And you will have a guaranteed Gold Standard cat! Cats Proection also have a wbsite where you can find your local branches and even see kittens!
try a search for cat rescues
Hi there!
Go to http://www.catchat.org/adoption... and you will find a COMPLETE list of shelters in your area (not just RSPCA and Blue Cross!) Be aware that any links to pictures of kittens could be out of date - so don't be put off if they don't seem to have what you are looking for online; just give them a call and arrange a viewing.
It is kitten season until November so many shelters are inundated with kittens at the moment - I doubt very much that you'll have any problem getting one (or two!). Have a look at this page too for more information: http://www.catchat.org/kittens.html...
If for some reason you cannot find a kitten from the shelters, type 'kittens for sale' into Google - there are loads of websites that come up, including:
http://www.pets4homes.co.uk
http://www.preloved.co.uk
http://www.kittenlist.co.uk
http://www.friday-ad.co.uk
Of course, you can also try your local ad papers. Please genuinely try shelters first though; you should have no problem finding a kitten at this time of year.
xx Emmie
I would try www.craigslist.org or www.freecycle.org. Also don't forget to check your local shelters.
Ask your vet if he knows of any good places for kittens - breeders and shelters and such. A website is not the best place to get a kitten as you don't know anything about the mother and father and if they're been looked after or not.
Hope this helps.
Please DONT BUY a kitten. it just encourages those to laze to have them spayed to use them to obtain cash.
Their are to many out their who prof fit from breeding litter after litter. Then replace the breeding female with one of her daughters.and start all over again,
Try your local vets, mine looks after strays and kittens so I'm sure other vets will do the same.
the adtrader and freeads websites are quite good
good luck
xXx
If there are..it willbe illegal.
go 2 a humane society cuz they dieeeeeeeeeee everyday
Look for the Website of the Friday Ad free newspaper. Lots of kitten adverts. Also try the Cats Protection cat rescue charity. I got my latest kitten off my local Freecycle site!
ummm go to the humane society...and what are u talking about...ofcourse u will find one!! those animals(expecially the adults) need rescuers like u!!

Anybody here have a cat that had the radioactive iodine treatment?

Or a vet that can give me advice. My boy is having it tomorrow and staying at the clinic for a week. He normally has the run of the house here and I'm worried about what to do with him once he comes home and I'm not really supposed to touch him or have him sleep on bedding or anything. Do I just lock him in a room and sterlize everything once the danger period is over? Of course I'll talk to the vet about it but does anybody here have any advice?
Answers:
I had it done for my cat. If you can...purchase a crate. Midwest makes them and you can purchase them at pet food centers. I would get one big enough so your baby can sleep, eat, and have a litter box. And move around. this way he can be in your room with you at night as well. You can touch your cat afterwards. The iodine gets excreted in the feces. That is what you have to handle with gloves. It is just a precautionary measure. Myself...I knew the amount of radioactive iodine was so minuscule that I just put it in a bag and threw it in the garbage. I also sent a shirt I slept in for her when she was away and her favorite food. But don't sent too much, cause you won't get it back. My Dr said Stephanie...She is not going off to summer camp. Please take some of this stuff home. LOL He will be fine and I hope for his sake it takes. Let me know and I hope I helped you out.
Hi
Just wondering if you have tried tghe pills first. They usually work for hyper t. Also if your cat is staying over with the vets for a week, the radiation shou;d be gone by the tme he gets home As I said the pills and a change of diet usually work.

Anybody have some "I hate cat jokes"? Aren't cats the best to pick on?

Answers:
wow people dont have a corinary! This person never once said he hates cats! He just wants some jokes jesus! Get a grip- if he had said he hated cats that would be one thing but he didnt so just answer his question, or leave him alone! ps- to answer your question no i dont have any "i hate cat" jokes
You shouldn't pick on any animal!!
What is your joke about cats . I like Cats very much don't You?
You are very immature. You only hate what you don't understand.
It's not cat's that are best to pick on. It's that by picking on cats, you make the cat-people mad. They're so cute when they're mad, it's sooooo funny to get in their craw.
I like to say "I really like cats, but I can never eat a whole one."
First, no I don't have any "I hate cat jokes". And Second, cats arn't best to pick on. They are very smart animals, and they can be very friendly if you treat them nice. I don't see why you would think they are best to pick on. Really, it's not best to pick on any animal.
NO!!
i have some i hate cat haters jokes
I HATE PEOPLE WHO HATE CATS, HOW BOUT THAT. I THINK THAT ONE IS HILARIOUS.
You make me sick and if you or anybody else picked on my cats, believe me sweetie, you would be a sorry wee soul.
If you cant think of anything nice to say.
SHUT IT!!!!!!!

Anybody have problems with cats peeing on carpet.?

I am losing my mind. I have the sweetest cat in the entire world, the sweetest, but he pees. I have tried everything. Please help. I need help with getting the smell permanently out and with getting him to stop. He is neutered and there are no medical problems as I had him checked out. He is just being an idiot. Please help.
Answers:
This is just an idea I don't know if it'll work. After getting the caret professionally cleaned, try putting the litter box over the area where the cat keeps peeing. Leave it there for a week or so, then day by day move it over an inch until its where you want it to be.
I don't know why cats do this. But it is the worse thing about cats because their pee, unlike a dog's pee, stays forever. My cats did this when they were kittens. It seems like they kept going back to the same spot because they coudl smell the pee. So, you really have to get it out. I think the best thing to do is to call a professional carpet cleaner to do it. Then maybe the cat will get the message that the box is the place to go. Make sure you always keep the box clean. If it's too dirty, they won't go in it.
This can be an intractable problem. It's one reason why I won't own another cat.
There is a retail store here that has a spray called Skunk Out. They also have one called Odor Out that is a stream you spray on. I KNOW the Skunk Out works. You might try saturating the area with it and washing it up. Use a carpet cleaner if it is carpet. I use it on my puppy's mishaps. There is never any odor left. There is a spray that you can spray around the area it keeps going to that it really won't like, but I think you have to spray it every few days. There are several products in our store here for odor. That is just the one that I tried. Good luck.
He may be marking his territory. My sister's male cat, Simon, was doing the same thing, but on the bed! He did have a urinary infection that was checked out twice, before it was caught. As for the smell, Pet Smart has a wonderful item that cleans and deodorizes the floor.
try showin yur cat that is wrong to pee on the carpet. show him where he should be peeing.
hes marking his terrotory he might smell another cat aroudd and hes telling them that its his turff
You have my sympathy. Inappropriate elimination is a frustrating, yet common, situation. It is the number one reason for owners giving up their pets. I am glad you are trying to work this out. Good on you for having him medically checked out. First, lets look at where he is going. You said a carpet. Is it one spot or several? An enzymatic cleaner will help remove the odor even he can smell, and that smell is drawing him back there. You may need to remove the carpet to get all the smell that soaked into the padding. How old is he? Does he ever use the litterbox? Did you change litter (new type)? Did something happen in the litterbox to scare him ie: someone or another pet scare him? loud washer kicked on?... Next, is the litterbox kept clean enough for him? Some cats are very picky. How many cats and litterboxs do you have and where are they located? (2 cats should have at least 2 litterboxs to choose from). Some cats even like one to defecate (poop) in and one to urinate in. Is the box big enough for him? Also, some cats don't like a covered litter pan because of smell and confinement issues. It could be "substrate preference". You can try putting a piece of carpet with very little litter in your box to retrain him since he seems to prefer carpet. You can place it in his preferred soiling area. Add more litter over time. Once he is using the box consistently, you can SLOWLY! move the box over several days to where you prefer. Feeding and playing with him in the area he usually goes may put him off that spot. I hope some of these suggestions help. Keep trying different combinations till you find one you can both live with! GOOD LUCK!!
My cat has also been neutered but her still tries marking his territory, which is I expect what yours is doing. I have cleaned the area thoroughly and have put down some stuff called wash and get off. I kept putting it down every morning and evening for about a month but he finally gave up.
Cats often do this if they:
a) don't have a private place for their litter box. Some cats are crazy about privacy
b) their litter box isn't big enough
c) they want two litter boxes

Seems annoying but trust me, these are generally the reasons for cats doing that if there aren't underlying medical reasons
As far as the smell in concerned, try Nature's Maid. If that doesn't work, then replace the carpet. I'd suggest you reconfigure the room so as to put something on his "favorite" place or at least block access.

I have to put one out right away because he was one of our favorite and sweetest kitties (and he matches your kitten's description.) His name was Lobo because he looked like a little sweet wolf pup.
Here are some of the boy names we have used that meet your description
Charlie
Willy
Smokey
Another kitty that we have now is name Kelko. His name means destroyer of the universe and though he is cute as can be, his name fits him to a Tee.
Well I personally think you should name it according to its personality.
You wouldn't want to name a cat sweetie and then it seem to be evil. I've always thought Frisky or Fancy were cute.
Sugar, Smokey, Maxey, Lucky, Lil' Bit, Big Boy. i like those.
