I just adopted a 7week old from the pound and he has been very good about going in the box for the week I have ahd him, but today when I cam home from work he pooped in a plastic grocery bag I had on the couch. Now i am worried he goes other places when I am not home. how can I teach him that he should just go in the litter box, not that plus other places?

It's hard to answer your question without knowing a bit more, but if he's been going in the box already, then he understands the concept - and maybe he just needs it reinforced.
Mama cats teach their kittens to go in the box by putting them in the box and then not letting them out until they go - you might try that.
But it just might be that he pooped somewhere else because he was upset (because he missed you) - he's still just a baby, after all. Don't panic. Just keep at it - consistency is the best teacher of all.
Good luck.
If you catch him going some place else, put his face by it and tap him on the nose. You can also shut him in a room with a litter box--someplace small like a bathroom--and monitor his potty usage that way in a controlled environment. Another solution is to set him in the litter box and move his paws back and forth so he gets the idea of what its for.
First, make sure you have brought your kitten to the vet for a check up to make sure it is not a medical problem.
Second, your kitten is still young, and was taken away from it's mother too soon. He may be confused about what he can and cannot use as a bathroom.
Make sure the litter box is away from his eating and sleeping area. Try using a clumping litter verses a standard clay. Try using cat attract in the litter, and don't leave plastic bags on the floor. My mother in law's cat will pee on any plastic bag it can find, but is otherwise perfectly litter trained.
Here's a link that should help

I have had different cats and my experience is that male ones are harder to train than females. First off don't leave plastic bags and newspaper lying around. I think they go on them because sometimes when they are kittens there in a place that is lined in newspaper.
Since you have a kitten it may be a good idea to keep your cat in a place when you are not home that he can't do to much damage to until he matures a little. Put him in a room with his litter box, food and water. Male cats mark their territory so you need to break this habit fast. At pet stores they sell some spray so they won't mark where you spray it. I used it and it helped. I would spray areas your cat hangs out and you don't want him to mark. Especially the couch where he went once.
You also want to make sure to clean the litter box daily. Some cats are picky. In other words if the litter box is too full they will find a new place to go.
Make sure to get the cat neutered when it is old enough or else he will get really out of control.
Lastly, give him praise and a treat - a little piece of meat or something special he likes and "Good kitty" after he uses the litter box. This helps reinforce that that is where he should go.
I have broke in 2 male cats. Good luck!
if the box has to much pee and poo in it the kitten will look for a better spot yo use.i have had cats and kittens for 45 years or more always keep the box clean and the best litter to use is fresh step it stay fresh longer the any other . good luck and have a good day!!!!!!!!!...
