Can a full grown cat survive in the wild?

My girlfriend is moving to the East coast for college, but she can't take her cat with her. The cat's name is Slinky and she really adores it, so I grudgingly agreed to take care of it for her.
Here's the problem: this cat has the most raspy meow I've ever heard, and it coughs all the time. On several occasions, it has kept me awake at night with its coughing and raspy meows. I asked my friend who's training to become a vet to come check the cat out, and it turns out I would need to take it to the vet and pay for surgery to fix the problems it has. Now, I have a lot a things I'd rather spend money on than some stupid cat, so I decided it was time to get rid of it.
I drove out to the woods and hiked a fair distance away from the road. Then I put Slinky up on a tree branch so it couldn't follow me and went home. However, now I'm feeling a little guilty. I know there's no bears in those woods, but coyotes do live there. Do you guys think a cat could survive in the woods like that?
Answers:
CALM! At This MOMENT IT MUST BE In A HOT And SOFT PLACE... INSIDE OF THE STOMACH OF SOME COYOTE...,
Oh my God, how wrong of you! Domestic cats are used to being fed and cared for. You've just doomed the poor cat to starvation, or being killed by another animal, or a vehicle. Please go and try to find it.
Oh my God! You are sooooo cruel. Don't even know why your are asking this as you know you have done a terrible thing. How could you.
No, it's animal cruelty and you what you did is hideous. The cat will die from its health problem or be killed by coyotes or dogs or another wild animal or starve to death.

Get off the computer and try and go find it. If I were your girlfriend I'd dump you and call the police.
You should feel guilty. That was a really horrible thing to do. It is a domesticated cat and a sick one on top of that. Why couldn't you have at least had the decency to take it to a shelter? They could've given it medical care and possibly found it a new home where it would actually be wanted. You make me sick.
that was pretty shitty of you to do
you could have atleast took it to a shelter!!
NO! She/Hes domesticated! GET THAT CAT
As a member of PETA, I hope the cat comes back and scratches your eyes out. You probably just condemned it to death. Nice job.
depending on it's injuries, no. if the cat can't run, then it's surly to get eaten. and there's probably no food for it to eat. so im saying no.
We have a wild cat at home.
We live in the country... we give him water when its hot... but he lives mostly on field mice... and he is healthy as any other cat...
he is huge...like tiger HUGE. and friendly.
Next time take it to the shelter or a vet and have it put down in a humane, respectfull way. If you cant afford an animal, dont get one. Poor thing is out there suffering.
no you probably just killed it because if the cat is a house cat it doesent know how to catch food and it doesent know how to get shelter or fend for itself you should have gave it up for adoption or put it in an animal shelter its probably suffering right now of the sickness it had and it is probably going to suffer and die
no that cat can survive a while, but sorry to tell you this, it wont make it for long. people are always turning dogs and cats loose around here as well. we always find them either so severely starved that they need to be put down, or a raccoon or coyote will get them, not to mention eagles and hawks. but climate may also take its part in killing your cat.
honestly, its cruelty to do this, abandonment, and selfishness. the cat will suffer now, whereas you could have taken it to a shelter. it shows great irresponsibility on your part. domesticated animals rely on us. and for reasons.
Absolutely not!
That cat will have been used to being fed and having a roof over it head. It will have no idea how to look after itself in the wild. Where will it go in bad weather? Where will it sleep, what will it eat, etc.
That cat will most likely be dead within a week. Either wild animals will kill it or it will starve to death.
How incredibly cruel.
And betraying your girlfriends trust like that...Awful.
Go back to that place and see if you can find the cat, and take it to a shelter.
If you didn't want the cat, you should have taken it to a no kill shelter. It was very cruel of you to leave it out in the wild like that. No, he really doesn't have a chance of surviving. I don't know how you can sleep at night.
dont b suprised if the cat shows back up.yes it can survive.coyotes cant climb trees.if i was your girlfriend i would kick u 2 the curb.
There are cats and dogs who live in the wild but most were never domesticated to begin with. I had 2 cats who I let outside who would not come home for days, yet they found food and water somehow. Then again I live in the city, not the wilderness.
That was pretty foolish, leaving a cat in the wilderness. Your cat was domesticated and dependent on humans, unless a miracle happens he's probably not gonna survive.
This is the stupidest thing anyone can do - especially knowing that the cat is SICK for crying out loud. Why not take it to a shelter or a rescue group. Or even a vet - they will find it a home or at least put it to sleep. THe cat is not used to fend for itself outdoors. It will most likely starve, if it doesn't hack itself to death.
You ought to feel guilty, you just scentenced the cat to a slow painful death of starvation.
WOW I've been called cold hearted because i hunt. But man what you did is just wrong. That was the act of a selfish cold hearted sob. She left the cat with you because she loves and trusted you to take care of it. So tell us what happens when she comes for a visit and says wheres the cat. Nice going you had better get used to living a lie if you want to keep her or grow a pair and fess up to the crime and take the punishment. The cat can make it on its own. Chances are it will work its way back some place and be taken in. Cats adapt quickly many hunt smalll birds and game al their lives. None the less there is no excuse for what you did.
I'm referring you to the SPCA. You'll regret you ever done that dumb ***. I suggest you get that cat before the SPCA goto your door, they have your IP ! =]
Sorry to say this, but that was really cruel and thoughtless. it's ok that you don't want the cat, but you didnt have to abandon the cat in the woods. You had to think before you took action. You could of called you GF and tell her that you cant take care of her cat anymore, or you could of have taken the cat to a shelter where he can get adopted.
If you really feel guilty then you should get up and go look for that cat then thik of where to put him.
lmao @ everybody harassing you
Call local animal rescue groups and see if they can help you to trap the cat. Some of the animal rescue groups offer "no kill" policies, you want to talk to them. This was a bad idea. See if you can find Slinky and surrender him to an animal rescue centre. You should be able to catch him in a trap, if not put up posters and see if he's found his way into a nearby neighbourhood.
You dropped your girlfriends cat off to die out in the wild...what a jerk.
Karma will get you one of these days and bite you right in the ***!.
Coyotes kill cats whenever they find them, so yes, you should feel guilty, you put a domestic cat into a wild environment it doesn't know and can't find food or water in, and left it.
If you've got any morals you'll tell your girlfriend what you did and own up to it.
Even better-go back and see if you can find it if it managed to survive the night.
Humane societies and animal shelters are in the phone book of every city--they're the easiest first step to take in rehoming a cat. What were you thinking?
No way!! That cat has been used to being fed and water being in a bowl. It doesn't have the wild instinct to search for water and food. They do hunt mice but only if they see them run past not that they know where to look. Also if they are scared they will hide and not come out to hunt and they will die. Also you left it in a tree? How is it going to survive up there. Don't cats usually get stuck up trees? Do you really think that a cat could take on a coyote? What is your girlfriend going to say when she finds out the cat went missing? I think you shoud get it's favourite food and go and search for this cat. Also I have had the flu for a week and I was keeping my husband awake with my coughing and he didn't dump me in the wild up a tree!! You could at least let the cat sleep somewhere else.

  1. Many of these people commenting have no idea that felines are natural PREDATORS. Domestication of felines is a new phenomenon. Granted, house cats are loving and sweet. But locked away in their DNA is the will to survive and thrive in the wild.

People commenting have no idea about cats. Neither do some veterinarians. I know cats. I love them, and I respect them.

If the cat is on the younger side, and healthy. He/she should do fine. As long as it is a rural setting with plenty of forestry, and or/ grassland. They will find plenty of rodents, insects, and feline edible plants to keep up their nutritional intake. Usually in large rural settings there will be ditches, ponds, small streams and other sources the cat will find plenty of water.

Many of these commenters think of the calm docile house cats in an environment where they are spoiled, coddled. And think to themselves. "Boy they can't survive! Their used to bowls, and being fed pre-packaged synthetic garbage food." FALSE. Like I said, Cats are natural predators. Built like them, and they can adapt to many wild settings.

My cat had severe temperment problems since she was a kitten. Nothing really changed, and I had her for 4 years, and tried everything under the sun. She loved being outside though, and I was getting complaints from neighbors that she was beating up other cats in the area. She would hiss and growl and chase her tail over and over. Keeping my wife and I up at night.

Recently we pondered our options, and we knew that she would not be wanted by anyone acting like that if we brought her to the Humaine Society, and would probably eventually be put down after sitting in a cage for weeks to months. That is something I can't live with as we love her very much. I can't put her in a cage! So I scouted out some places on our local city map, and found a place where a large prairie reserve and a forest reserve meet outside the city. So we took her there one day, and left her with a bowl of food and her blanket. It was emotional for all of us, but my cat seemed to be very interested in the area, and almost excited. As if she wanted to be in the wild all along.

I WOULD NEVER bring her to the humaine society. I think people have been indoctrinated to think that the Humaine Society is really the only answer. When in-fact they push drugs, imprison animals, and euthanize them.

I did the right thing. I know it in my heart. And instead of her sitting in a cage. She is FREE.

  2. You didn't do the right thing, you piece of shit. Cats are able to climb up trees, but they can't climb down trees. She probably starved to death up in the tree. You're the stupidest fuck I've ever had the fucking privilege to see. You could have at least asked your girlfriend if anyone she knows could take the cat. I'd kill myself if I had a boyfriend like you. Dumbass.
