Can Advantage for dogs be used on cats?

I went to the vet today and they gave me Advantage for Dogs to use on my cats. They said it goes longer, 1/2CC for under 10 lbs and 1CC for 10 lbs or over for cats. Is this safe? It is 9.1% imidacloprid.
Answers:
I have posted a link to a website. As you can see in the chart, the answer is a qualified yes. As long as it is Advantage, and not K9Advantix.
Follow the dosing instructions from your vet.

How to Apply
1. Use only on dogs. Do not use on other animals.
2. Remove one applicator tube from the package.

3. Hold applicator tube in an upright position. Pull cap off tube.
4. Turn the cap around and place other end of cap back on tube.
5. Twist cap to break seal, then remove cap from tube.
6. 10 lbs. and under:
11-20 lbs.:

The dog should be standing for easy application. Part the hair on the dog's back, between the shoulder blades, until the skin is visible. Place the tip of the tube on the skin and squeeze the tube twice to expel the entire contents directly on the skin. Do not get this product in your pet's eyes or mouth.
21-55 lbs.:
Over 55 lbs.:

The dog should be standing for easy application. The entire contents of the Advantage庐 tube should be applied evenly to three or four spots on the top of the back from the shoulder to the base of the tail. At each spot, part the hair until the skin is visible. Place the tip of the tube on the skin and gently squeeze to expel a portion of the solution on the skin. Do not apply an excessive amount of solution at any one spot that could cause some of the solution to run off the side of the dog.
7. Discard empty tube as described in Storage and Disposal.
The successive feeding activity of fleas on pets may elicit a hypersensitivity skin disorder known as flea allergy dermatitis (FAD). Treatment of pets with Advantage庐 rapidly kills fleas and may reduce the incidence of this condition.
Advantage庐 kills 98-100% of the existing fleas on pets within 12 hours. Reinfesting fleas are killed within 2 hours with protection against further flea infestation lasting at least four (4) weeks. Pre-existing pupae in the environment may continue to emerge for six (6) weeks or longer depending upon the climatic conditions.
Larval flea stages in the pet's surroundings are killed following contact with an Advantage庐 treated pet.
Advantage庐 remains efficacious following a shampoo treatment, swimming or after exposure to rain or sunlight.
Monthly treatments are required for optimal control and prevention of fleas.
If re-treatment becomes necessary earlier than four weeks, do not re-treat more than once weekly.

Ive used advantage for dogs on my cat as long as your cat or dog is 8 weeks and older , my cat is just fine and i put it on him over a month ago, he has no skin problems or anything. i think they say not too use it on cats so you spend more money though. i only use half a bottle on the cat, just in case its too strong for him, cause there is a lot in there. no fleas YAY.
No it is not safe.read the label on the thing it says keep off of cats and if you put it on a dog the dog shouldn't even have contact with the cats for 12-24 hours. Do not even think about putting that on your cats I would think about getting a new vet with that kind of service!!
NO!! NO!! NO!
I almost killed my cat from a mix-up! Very harmful! VERY! PLEASE DON"T DO IT!
Causes: convulsions and seizures--then Coma, and death! it cost me $350 to save my cat's life and it took her three days to recover from a coma. They had to pump her full of charcoal and saline. She only had a small amount too before my father realized the mistake.
Not worth the risk! Call a differnt vet for a second opionion. Your vet is CRAZY! or just by a flea collar.
Yes it's fine. I'm actually surprised your vet did that, most seem to be more concerned about making money. I buy the doseage for large dogs, and use it on all 3 of my dogs. One is large, but the other 2 are medium, so I split the tube between the 2 smaller ones. Saves a lot of money. If you compare the different sizes of the packages, the medicine dosage in all the sizes is the same amount-regardless if it's for a small dog or large dog it's the same, it's just the tube sizes are different.

  1. I don't know if anyone is still following this thread but, yes, it's completely safe. I have been dividing up the large tubes (for dogs) between my small dog and multiple cats for many years. If you call the Bayer company who makes Advantage, they will tell you it's ok and the proper dosage per weight of the cat, which is very important to follow. If a cat gets sick and starts vomiting, it's most likely because it was applied too low down on the back and he/she was able to lick it. I put it right on the base of their sculls so that no matter how far around they twist their heads, they can't lick it off.
