Bad Cat Behavior?

I have a long black haired black cat. His name is Dante he is 1 year old. I am having a really difficult time with him to stop knocking things off of bookshelves, biting, scratching furniture. Its becoming ridiculous. And there are some days he is just sweet as pie Mr. Lovey. What the heck am i to do??
Answers:
Hm. He might just be a grumpy cat some days. I have a large, fat cat named Mary. She is just like that; one day, she's the sweetest cat in the world, the next day she's got a little storm cloud over her head, and attacks if you touch her.
Just a moody cat, I think. =]
awww, all cats go through this, esp the boys! they can be little s***s at times, esp between 6 months and 18 months. dont worry, he'll calm down. my cat was a nightmare too but he's as good as gold these days. dont let him bite you though, or he'l never stop. a soft tap on his nose and he'll learn not to
He is a young cat and is boored out of his little flea flippin' mind. Play with him more. Get him a friend.
you have to show him who's boss. Right now he thinks he is. Think of a good punishment, like confining him to a small room for awhile each time he bites/scratches you...or keep a spray water bottle nearby %26 spray him each time...or just hiss at him :P
Your cat has pent up energy and it's causing him to get into mischief. Try dedicating more time to play with him on a daily basis. The more you tire him out and give him scensory stimulation, the less likely he'll be to get into trouble.
Leave toys out for him to occupy himself with. If you give him treats, put them in out of the way spots, like behind a chair or on a window sill that he likes to perch on. This will satisfy his instict to hunt. If he is able to express his natural behavior he'll be a more relaxed kitty.
Three things:
1)Don't let your cat know you're super mad at him (this usually causes behavior to get worse).
2)There is something you can buy called Boundry (you can get it at Petco/Petsmart) and spray it on anything you don't want the cat on. Follow the directions on the bottle and it usually works
3)You can also buy Bitter Apple Spray (they hate the smell but it mainly helps with anything they chew on)
Give those things a try and see if it helps. If no luck, consult your vet or pet trainer
Your cat is still young and could be bored or wanting more attention. Make sure you have plenty of toys for him to play with and make sure you give him plenty of attention when you are home.
To help stop the bad behavior, keep a spray bottle filled with water within reach at all times. When he does something that you don't want him to do (i.e., bite, scratch furniture), spray him in the face with the water. After a while, he'll associate that bad behavior with getting a face full of water and he'll stop doing it. Be patient and have fun with your pet.
haha - Yup I agree with the first answer! All my boy cats went through that too - right around the same age!. He will definately become the best pet ever if he's showing you how lovey he can be! My boy is about 10months now and he is doing the exact same thing. He is such a hellion but there are moments of sanity where he is just the most wonderful cat! I can tell he is going to be the most amazing pet in a few months, simply because he has never had anything bad done to him (very trusting) and he is such a suck (when he's not ripping up the carpet, knocking things off the counter (which is now free of things to knock off - for the time being) or biting his older sister). I recommend putting away your nick-nacks until he's a little older, playing with him a lot (laser pointers work really well) and slowly move your hand away when he bites saying "OW" really loudly (if you move it away too fast he'll think you're playing). As for the clawing - scratching posts with catnip rubbed into them seemed to have worked for my boy, and a nice water pistol to squirt him with when he goes after the carpet. He is learning that he doesn't like the carpet so much!
Good luck!
could he be lonely and need more toys to plays with or he wants you to play catnip bubbles are fun try it
