I find it easiest to bathe my cats by filling my bathtub with a couple of inches of water. Put a towel in the bottom so kitty won't slide around. Get in the tub with kitty and put them on the towel facing away from you. When they back up, they will back up into you which prevents them from going anywhere. If they try to go forward or sideways, they will be easier to hold onto. Use a cup or a hand held shower to gently cover them with warm, not hot, water. Try to avoid the face as much as possible. Soap kitty up, rinse kitty off, and dry gently with a towel, all as quickly as possible. After this kitty will probably run and hide for a while.
Bathe your cat with dawn dishwashing liquid. Use just the standard blue stuff, nothing fancy. This is the same stuff they used to clean the penguins who were covered in oil from the Exxon Valdez. The dawn will cut through the oil. Try to only do this once if possible because you don't want his skin to dry out. If you have to do it more than once, try to finish with a moisturizing kitty shampoo. Never use human shampoo as it is not formulated for kitty's sensitive skin.
While it is important to reduce the stress on kitty, it is important to get as much of this off of him as possible so just do the best you can.
I know that most retail stores have 'pet wipes' for cats as an alternative to bathing. My cat also HATES baths! I've given up and started using these wipes instead. They are like large, thick baby wipes. If your cat enjoys being loved and petted, she might not mind these wipes. Good luck!!
You can call your vet and ask the doctor to give you a light sedative (it won't make your cat sleep, it will just take the edge off) Acepromazine is a popular one as long as your can is healthy and doesn't have a history of seizures. It will make the bath easier. Also try using in the bath the johnson's night time bath wash with lavender - the scent is also calming. If the bath won't work at all - either take the cat to a groomer to do it or just use baby wipes and wipe the cat a few times a day - just like you are petting her, she will never know that you are cleaning that oil off! Hope that helps
Wrap the cat in a towel.DO this when Hubby or friend is home. You will need the help. You'll have to wrap the cats paws so you stay safe.Use some(just a wee bit) of dish soap only to area where oil is)apply with a small rag that has been dipped in semi-soapy water.Squeeze the water the best you can and wipe as fast as you can.
Take the cat to the shelter and let it be adopted by a family that has time for a pet. You have a child and by your request, you show you don't watch either of them. If you let your child handle chemicals, like baby oil, but it could easily have been toilet bowl cleaner or dish detergent or bug spray, then you seriously need to reasses who has a priority in your life, your cat or your child. (are you going to delete this because of YOUR selfishness?) Let your child grow with you (not you and a pet) until the age of 6 or when you believe your child has understanding and a measure of responsibility (whichever comes LAST), and start with something simple like a fish or a mouse
Shave first if long-haired. My little sister put baby powder on my late long-haired cat. He had to be shaved, and was not pleased, to say the least.
try bathing her/him with warm water my cat love warm water with shampoo and rinse him very well.
You might have him bathed at your vets, or try a professional groomer.
Aww, the wonderful mind of a three year old. Of course she has seen the oil put on babies (or herself) and she thinks the cat needs it too. Watch out when she first uses scissors or she will try a trim on the cat's whiskers or coat.
I would never have "punished" her for that. At any rate, the oil won't be easy to get off and hope you can take the cat to a groomer or a vet for a bath with something that willl cut the oil. If she didn't get the cat really dowsed with it the cat may be able to deal with it. The baby oil will be non-toxic and if the oil is all over the cat will have a hard time dealing with it.
You have enough on your hands just being a mother to a toddler and I hope you can take the clean-up to a professional. It's not worth your getting stress or scratched about. It will be a story you will "tell" on your daughter all her life!
Hannah's answer is best. It is what I was going to write.
No matter how hard you try you always struggle with cats. Sometimes you have to wrestle with them. lol
I don't see why this is such a big deal...just hold teh cat and wipe him down. Or take him to a groomer tomorrow.
that is HORRID. poor thing. well the best thing to do is wrestle it into the tub. not much else you can do
