I live in a flat with no garden but would still like to have a cat that I can keep indoors.
I don't really like the idea of my cat wondering around the complex (there are about 100 other flats here) and I am concerned about the impact cats have on wildlife.
So basically I was wondering if anyone could suggest a breed that prefers staying indoors/on patio and doesn't have much interest in exploring/hunting in the outdoors?

You should absolutely look into adopting a Ragdoll baby!! I have just done a lot of research to find the type of kitten to suit our family and I had all the same reasons as you! I wanted something that wouldn’t hurt all our beautiful wildlife, an indoor cat, and one that would withstand my 4 year olds constant need to play with her lol!! So after looking into a lot of breeds we chose the Ragdoll and fell in love! Here is some info on the ragdoll I just got off a website but if you look at any breeders websites in your town/city you will get heaps of information!
Ragdoll owners will tell you that they are completely captivated by their Ragdolls'
sweet, loving, layback temperament.
That they will absolutely steal you heart away, and completely infatuate you.
They are perfect companions for the elderly as well as singles and families, they
get along, introduced correctly, with almost anyone and anything.
They are very well suited to small apartments, townhouses, etc as they are totally
INDOOR cats and are perfectly happy to lie around enjoying the luxury and safety
of your and their own home.
They are very much a people cat, wanting to be with you wherever you go, watching

safety, as they do not have a defensive nature, and are unable to protect themselves
against the outside world and all of its dangers.

Good luck choosing your new baby, if you do go with the ragdoll, make sure you look around a lot, and be prepared to wait as they are a popular breed (I waited 10 weeks cause I was lucky and found someone who just had babies so I didn’t have to go on a waiting list) there are some people out there that just want to make money, be sure to trust who you get your kitten from and make sure they are raised to have the amazing ragdoll temperament!

This is so true, my kitten just flops like a baby when I pick her up and she lets my son carry her around the house ALL day long!! Most other cats would have had enough of my 4 year old after the 1st 5 minutes lol. She is so cute (as all kittens are) and has the most beautiful big blue eyes!! Ragdolls eyes stay blue. She has the loveliest personality and as soon as I walk into a room she starts to purr she is always on my lap wanting some love and giving it back in return :)

Get a queen. Pedigree Burmans work well. Maybe 2 to keep each other company.
Pretty much any cat, if you get a young Kitten they adapt well to always being indoors.
It's safer for them anyway, as they don't get hit by cars, or attacked by other animals. You don't have to worry about Vet bills because they've gotten into a fight with another cat and gotten badly hurt. I really don't understand why people let their cats run loose, when it's so dangerous out there for them.
I have always worked in pet food stores and I hear all the time about "my poor kitty got hit by a car" or my poor kitty was attacked by neighborhood dogs". Keep them inside where they are safe. Simple!
Persians and Ragdolls are pretty docile cats. There are many other breeds that live well indoors. You can read about different breeds on this website:

But a cat doesn't have to be of a certain breed to live happily indoors. When looking at cats, watch how they interact with their environment and with humans. If a cat is overactive and hyper, then that cat may not be a good match for you. A cat that is laid back, sweet, friendly, playful and docile would make a nice indoor pet.
Plenty of mixed breed cats make terrific indoor pets. I had a cat that lived indoors for 17 years, but I would take her outside in the backyard in nice weather, and she would stay on my lap the whole time or lay on the picnic table. She was totally content living indoors.
As far as a particular breed being better suited for life indoors, a cat is a cat -- none will be outstandingly suited to apartment life above the others. The most outdoor-oriented breed I can think of is the Maine Coon, and I know one who lives quite happily indoors. They all have a hunting instinct, but I promise you can keep *any* kitty entertained and safe indoors with little toys and a sturdy scratching post.
Visit your local animal shelter or rescue and talk with the staff. Those who have spent some time around the cats should be able to help you pick the perect companion. If you must have a particular breed, first check the breed rescues for that breed. Some rescues will even insist that the cat be strictly indoors, which settles the issue right there. Any reputable breeder will almost certainly insist that the cat be indoor only. But, there are so many pets that need homes, so please try the shelters first. Avoid altogether the ads in the paper and the retail pet stores...those individuals make money on the backs of kittens, and shouldn't be supported.
I don't know where you live, but please do NOT subject your cat to de-clawing surgery. Sometimes people do this to cats that will be indoors to protect their furniture. It's cruel and their are other ways to keep kitty from shredding your stuff, like regular claw clippings (it's easy, I do it all the time) and an enticing scratching post.
That being said, your cat probably would like a window seat to survey the outdoors and watch the birds, and she might be curious about what's beyond the door you pass through every day when you go out. But, it's best all around for her to be inside, and she will certainly not die of boredom. Instead, she'll stalk and hunt the toys you provide, and enjoy her comfortable life in your flat.
A Persian or Exotic would be the best, or some mix with a Persian or Exotic. They are very mellow.
All cats have an interest in hunting and exploring or whatever, but if you get a very small kitten it will adapt to being an inside cat. There are lots of things you can do to make life a little more interesting for indoor cats. For example toys and scratch posts. You can put a ledge or something up by the window where they can lie and look outside.
