"My cat is 8 yrs old and has developed a great increase in the thickness of her fur .It now appears clumpy.

She was what I would call the 'runt' of a litter , is small .and had skin problems as a young cat but these cleared several years ago. The fur on her head is normal. She has been treated with frontline
Answers:
I would take her to the vet, my cat's fur was very thick when he got older because he was unable to groom properly, but it can also be a sign of imroperly functioning kidneys/liver
Look at her teeth. More than likely she is losing her comb teeth, thoes tiny teeth that are between her canines. You need to start brushing her once a day.
Ummm...Gross
Has it just "matted"?
If that's all it is, you need to try and remove them - gentle combing or brush, and if that doesn't work, ease them gently away from the skin and try to cut them off. Otherwise she may need to have it sorted by your Vet.
Cats have been moulting a little oddly this summer due to the unseasonal weather and they really need a quick comb or brush through daily while shedding their fur. If mats are left, they can cause tearing of the animal's skin.
take her to the vets before it gets serious.. it could just be the weather or something but only a vet would know wots really wrong with her.. could be mites that have become immune to frontline and this could be causeing it.
Has she had a check up at the vets, as she may need a dental. Most cats over 5 yrs old require a dental check up.
You can purchase cod live oil capsules especially for cats from your pet shop, this will condition her fur.
Also you can purchase cat malt from your pet shop to help her with the ingestion of cat fur.
Also comb her every day.
If this does not help then a dental check up is definitely due.
Good Luck
